Political Philosophers
When I went to college, my major was Political Science. The field is very broad, and I focused on my own areas of interest, the American political system. I also dabbled in comparative political systems and international politics. In all that time, I seem to have been able to avoid almost any contact with much in the way of classical political theory. As time has gone on, I've read about the political influences of the Framers and had others ask me, or tell me, about classical political theory. Because I've found some background in this area to be helpful, I present here a very shallow overview of some of what I've learned. By no means is this page complete, and by no means do I present myself as an expert in this area. What I do hope to do is present a few of the important classical influences on the Framers and on modern theory, and to give links to sites where visitors can go to learn much more. I welcome suggestions for more to add to this page. I also welcome corrections. Email me with any of either.

Berry discusses the changes that the ideas of liberty and the historical conditions have undergone since Adam Smith. Business has become a natural and respectable human activity, and modern economic liberty in the sense of free choice has become all-inclusive - each and every member of the community has an opportunity to get involved if he/she so wishes. In modern liberalism every individual pursues his own desires and the function of the politics of the state is to provide an economic, judiciary and moral framework for that activity. "Liberal Humanism and the Development of Cultural Policy in Britain" by Glenn Jordan presents the development of cultural institutions in Britain from the latter 19 th century to the present, and is focused on ideological assumptions governing the cultural politics in heritage, education and arts funding. The concluding issue, raised in the tradition of socialism, is the opportunity of the realization of cultural needs by marginalized groups within British society. The perception of Hayek's doctrine of liberalism in Poland is the subject matter of the paper by Janina Godlow-Legiedz ("Friedrich von Hayek's Liberalism and the State Transformation in Poland"), who raises the following questions: in what way Hayek's doctrine can be used for the process of political transformation; the degree of practical application of Hayek's ideas, provided they are convincing and coherent; and, the evaluation of

Thomas Hollis (1720-1774) The Strenuous Whig. The single most important thread of this exhibition of books and prints is the work of Thomas Hollis. His interest in the defenders of tyrannicide and limited government is part of the tapestry of liberty which he created until his death in 1774. Hollis's interests provide the temporal limits for this Exhibition. Our collection of Classical Republicans, Whigs, and Tories will extend from the 16th to the mid-18th centuries.
Hollis was a one-man promoter and propagandist for liberty and radical Whiggism. To compare him to something modern, he was a one-man Liberty Fund: he published beautiful books with the intent of spreading the ideas which they held. Hollis understood that people liked to hold beautiful books in their hands; the "feast of reason" would be enjoyed all the more if it were artfully presented.
Hollis sent the books, the Hollis Liberty prints, medals, and other memorabilia to those places which he thought could make good use of them. Although Princeton University was the first to receive his book, Harvard University was the most important of the recipients in this country. In recent years, attention to Hollis has primarily been inspired by the work of Caroline Robbins; many of the facts in this guide are owed to her painstaking work.
