Quotations "Twilight combined with the scenery of Egdon Heath to evolve a thing majestic without severity, impressive without showiness, emphatic in its admonitions, grand in its simplicity. The qualifications which frequently invest the facade of a prison with far more dignity than is found in the facade of a palace double its size lent to this health a sublimity in which spots renowned for beauty of the accepted kind are utterly wanting. Fair prospects wed happily with fair times; but alas, if times be not fair!"
Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), British novelist, poet. The Return of the Native, book first, ch. I (1878). "He had been a lad of whom something was expected. Beyond this all had been chaos. That he would be successful in an original way, or that he would go to the dogs in an original way, seemed equally probable. The only absolute certainty about him was that he would not stand still in the circumstances amid which he was born."

Thomas Hardy
British novelist Thomas Hardy was born Upper Bockhampton, in Dorset. After schooling in Dorchester, he studied as an architect. At age 22, he moved to London and began to write poems expressing his love of rural life. He was unsuccessful at getting his poetry published and turned to writing novels. Hardy's first novel, Desperate Remedies was published in 1871. His second novel, Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), established his career as a novelist. Other notable novels are The Return of the Native The Mayor of Casterbridge Tess of the D'Urbervilles (1891) and Jude the Obscure (1896). Hardy also authored a collection of short stories, entitled The Wessex Tales , the best-known of which which is The Withered Arm . Most of his novels were tragedies, and he appeared to grow more pessimistic in later life. He returned to poetry and produced several volumes of sardonic lyrics and the epic drama, The Dynasts

THOMAS HARDY AND HIS WESSEX Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) is unique. He is known today as a poet and novelist, as well as the writer of a number of short stories. However he started his career as an architect. His novels and poems are now known and loved throughout the world, yet he was born, grew up and lived most of his long life in a provincial backwater. When he died, he was known for his fatalistic views of life and for being an agnostic; and yet Hardy was quoted as saying that he had once wanted to be a clergyman. He longed to be educated at one of the great universities; although failing his ambition he is now one of the world's most studied authors. His blend of nostalgic longing for a simpler past, together with a "modern" philosophical view of the world, gives us unique insights into the human condition. And his sheer longevity in terms of creative output is amazing in itself. He managed in all more than 70 years of writing novels, short stories, poems and the occasional theatrical exploit. And he was published for more than 50 of those years. Within this site you can find introductions to his novels, poem texts, and photographs of the beautiful part of the world in which Hardy created his own world.

BIOGRAPHY Born in the rural village of Higher Bockhampton in Dorset, Thomas Hardy was the son of a stonemason. Early on, his mother encouraged his reading, and at age 16 he apprenticed to study architecture, later traveling to London to pursue that trade at 22. Although he considered taking Holy Orders, in London he gradually adopted a more modern skepticism toward religion owing, in part, to his reading of Charles Darwin, Herbert Spencer, and John Stuart Mill. Hardy began life as a writer by returning to Dorchester in 1867, where he worked on an unpublished novel, The Poor Man and the Lady . In the 1870 he emerged as a novelist with a popular following for such works of fiction as
