Best book I have read in years
Apart from Chernow's considerable literary prowess, this book makes for a thorough and objective historical record of just how extraordinary this man was from any objective standpoint. Asked to name the founding fathers before hearing of this book, I would have cited the usual figures: Jefferson, Washington, Franklin, and Madison. I wouldn't even have thought of Hamilton. Having read the book, however, it's a defensible argument that while Hamilton (unfortunately) basks in the shadows of the others as far as the popular imagination goes (possible owing only to his relatively short life), he may have been the greatest mind and the most instrumental of all of them. He certainly was, as Chernow puts it, the "father of the American government" (in the sense of actual administration) even if he was not the father of the system of government or of the American identity, per se. Lastly, apart from telling Hamilton's story, Chernow has written an outstanding book that is a real contribution to the copious general literature on the birth and genesis of America. I learned more about how our country came to be in this period than from any of my sterile high-school history classes. The most wonderful thing is that despite my more-than occasional-lack-of-confidence in today's politics and politicians, this book has actually made me proud to be an American again and appreciate this great national experiment that has managed to triumph above all odds because of these men. I have not read any of the other recent books on the great men of the constitutional era, such as 'Founding Brothers' or 'John Adams' (both of which Chernow quotes from frequently), but I now feel inspired to do so.

Alexander Hamilton the Revolutionary Alexander Hamilton was born on January 11, 1755 (or 1757 by some accounts) in Charleston on the West Indies island of Nevis. He was born out of wedlock to Rachel Faucitt Lavien and James Hamilton, who abandoned the family in 1765. A local clergyman raised funds to send Alexander away to school in 1773. He entered Kings College (now known as Columbia University) in 1774. In the Revolutionary War he distinguished himself in the eyes of General Washington who made him one of his six aides-de-camp (secretaries) in 1777, and rode beside him in the battles at Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. Hamilton married Elizabeth Schuyler in 1780, with whom he had eight children. Although this incredible man has been studied and written about as much as any American statesman, historians often pass over any mention of Hamilton's expression of intense love for his male comrades.
    Alexander Hamilton and George Washington
Alexander Hamilton's election to the first Continental Congress led him to a number of prominent assignments in building the new nation. He was a driving force in the ratification of the U. S. Constitution, and was the only New York delegate to sign the document. On June 18, 1787, he gave an address in which he outlined a comprehensive plan for the national government. He co-authored the Federalists papers with John Jay and James Madison under the pseudonym Publius. "I'm sorry you went away. I wish you were back."

Alexander Hamilton was born a British subject on the island of Nevis in the West Indies on January 11, 1755. His father was James Hamilton, a Scottish merchant of St. Christopher. Hamilton’s mother was Rachael Fawcette Levine, of French Huguenot descent. When she was very young, she had married a Danish proprietor of St. Croix named John Michael Levine. Ms. Levine left her husband and was later divorced from him on June 25, 1759. Under Danish law, Ms. Levine was forbidden from remarrying. Thus, Hamilton’s birth was legally illegitimate. Business failures resulted in the bankruptcy of his father. After the death of his mother, at the age of twelve, Alexander entered the counting house of Nicholas Cruger and David Beekman and served as a clerk and apprentice. By the age of fifteen, Alexander was left in charge of the business. Opportunities for regular schooling were very limited. With the aid of funds advanced by friends, Hamilton studied at a grammar school in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. In 1774, he graduated and entered King’s College (now Columbia University) in New York City and in one year obtained a bachelor’s of arts degree. Hamilton married Elizabeth, the daughter of General Philip Schuyler, on December 14, 1780. The Schuylers were one of the most distinguished families in New York. This connection placed Hamilton at the center of New York society. In 1782, he was admitted to legal practice in New York and became an assistant to Robert Morris who was then superintendent of finance.

    Hamilton, Alexander (1757-1804)
page: A hero of the American Revolutionary War and a prominent statesman in the government of the newly formed United States, Alexander Hamilton was held in high public esteem for his knowledge of military operations, economics, and politics, and for his fervent patriotism. In his private life he had affectionate relationships with both men and women, but perhaps his most intense romantic bond was with a young man, John Laurens, who was killed in 1782. Early Life Hamilton was born January 11, 1757 on Nevis, a British colony in the Leeward Islands. His father was a prosperous merchant but lost his fortune. When Hamilton was six, his father abandoned the family, and his mother found refuge for her two sons and herself with relatives on St. Croix. Following his mother's death in 1768, Hamilton, at age twelve, went to work for a local merchant. His obvious intelligence so impressed his employer and his relatives that they arranged to send him to the mainland to pursue his education. Sponsor Message.

    Hamilton, Alexander (1757-1804)
page: Hamilton's Further Career When the Revolutionary War ended, Hamilton spent several months in the intense study of law, after which he was admitted to the bar in the state of New York. His intention at the timecontrary to his recommendation to Laurenswas to devote only a short time to public service before turning to law as a career. Hamilton did retire from Congress in 1783 to start a law practice in New York City, but his political career was far from over. He participated in the Constitutional Convention of 1787, and when Washington became president in 1789 he chose Hamilton as his Secretary of the Treasury. Sponsor Message.
Because of Washington's esteem for him, Hamilton was able to wield wider power than the secretaryship of a single department conferred, which sometimes led to clashes with other members of Washington's administration. Hamilton faced a crisis in 1792 when several of his political adversaries, including James Monroe, accused him of financial improprieties in office. They based their allegations on the story of a small-time con man, James Reynolds, to whom Hamilton had given money. To defend himself against the accusations, Hamilton was forced to admit to having been inveigled into an affair with the man's wife, Maria Reynolds. The couple's objectivein which they succeededhad been blackmail, and Reynolds concocted the second story only to deflect blame from himself.
