ALEXANDER HAMILTON
HAMILTON, ALEXANDER i These were written in answer to the widely read pamphlets published over the nom de plume of A Westchester Farmer, and now known to have been written by Samuel Seabury (q.v.). Hamiltons pamphlets were entitled A Full Vindication of the Measures of the Congress from the Calumnies of their Enemies, and The Farmer Refuted. Concerning them George Ticknor Curtis (Constitutional History of the United States, i. 274) has said, There are displayed in these papers a power of reasoning and sarcasm, a knowledge of the principles of government and of the English constitution, and a grasp of the merits of the whole controversy, that would have done honor to any man at any age. To say that they evince precocity of intellect gives no idea of their main characteristics. They show great maturitya more remarkable maturity than has ever been exhibited by any other person, at so early an age, in the same department of thought. i George Bancroft was the first to point out that there is small evidence that Hamilton ever really appreciated Washingtons great qualities; but on the score of persohal and Federalist indebtedness he left explicit recognition. . For Hamiltons letter to General Schuyler on this episode one of the most important letters, in some ways, that he ever wrote see the Works, ix. 232 (8 35).

ALEXANDER HAMILTON .............. BIOGRAPHY ..............
Hamilton retired to a lucrative New York legal practice in 1795, but remained involved in public affairs. He became second in command of the army when war with France seemed imminent in 1798. He plotted against the election of John Adams in 1796 and 1800, and tried to influence members of Adams' cabinet behind his back. In 1800, he used his political power to deter the election of Aaron Burr. This, along with other unfriendly actions, caused Burr to challenge Hamilton to a duel in July 1804, which left Hamilton dead.

Man is a reasoning rather than a reasonable animal. I never expect to see a perfect work from imperfect men. Real firmness is good for anything; strut is good for nothing. Men often oppose a thing merely because they have had no agency in planning it, or because it may have been planned by those whom they dislike.
