This cemetery was established in the 1880s. According to the staff, there are no records of any burials before 1891. Records of burials between 1891 and 1915 contain only a limited amount of information. Records after 1915 are much more complete. Most of the earlier burials are Irish, but there are some Portuguese and French as well. We have only transcribed those stones that are, or likely are, of Irish individuals, and others are included if they were on the same stone. Transcriptions are completed of all existing stones of Irish burials for Plats 1, 2, 2A and 3. (10/02) Plat 1

[The Heritage of Sociology.] The University of Chicago Press, Chicago [etc.] 1992. ix, 244 pp. $15.00. This is the first English translation of the writings on collective memory by the French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs (1877-1945), one of the most important advocates of the Durkheimian tradition in the Interbellum. Halbwachs's thesis is that human memory can only function within a collective context, which can be evoked by, e.g., war memorials and socially significant anniversaries, but also by family reminiscences: thus various groups of people have different collective memories. In his biographical introduction the editor sketches the important influence of Henri Bergson's philosophy on Halbwachs's work. NOTE: Between the fall of 2000 and fall of 2001, I performed an extensive effort to perform a full inventory (with tombstone pictures) of Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur. That results of that effort are shown below. At the end of each entry is a indication of what section of the cemetery the stone is located in. Locations of each section within the cemetery can be seen on the map on my Riverside Cemetery index page.

Committee to Review Australian Studies in Tertiary Education
Supported Pages Former Supporters Foundation Supporters Financial support for work on the Guide to the Archives of Science in Australia came from three sources. The project was initially funded by a grant from the Committee to Review Australian Studies in Tertiary Education (CRASTE) in late 1987. CRASTE was established by the Commonwealth Department of Employment, Education and Training in connection with the Australian Bicentenary celebrations of 1988. Though it was realised from the outset that this grant would not be sufficient to see the task completed, it did allow the collection of a significant amount of data and the establishment of a database system to handle the information. A grant from the Helen M. Schutt Trust in late 1988 allowed for the further collation of data and its entry into the database. Then in late 1989 the National Centre for Research and Development in Australian Studies (now the National Centre for Australian Studies) at Monash University provided sufficient funds to see the remaining data processed and the output prepared for publication. The National Library of Australia also provided funds to allow work to continue on the database, specifically the collation and assemblage of data in a format suitable for use on the OZLINE network.

********************************************************************************* HILLSBORO PIONEER CEMETERY Washington County, Hillsboro, OR In 1870, the International Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) and Mason Lodges began what is now the oldest cemetery in Washington County, Oregon. In 1973 it was deeded to the City of Hillsboro for perpetual care. In 1969, just shy of the Pioneer Cemetery's Centennial, Mrs. Joseph Lepschat, an avid stone reader, was heralded for her meticulous examination and recordings of each visually available gravestone. Using a cemetery map from 1910, it took the elderly Mrs. Lepschat several years to complete her project. She shared this information with the D.A.R., David Hill Chapter in Hillsboro and the Genealogical Forum of Portland. In 2002, Vicki Greer Oliver obtained a copy of the cemetery records from a local mortuary; however, there are no recent burials recorded in these records. The information entered has been tripled checked for accuracy against what was received; however, this does not guarantee 100% accuracy for genealogy purposes. Where apparent, women are listed under both their maiden and married names. There are wonderful stories connected with this cemetery, here are but a few. * Mary Ramsey Wood born 1787 - 1908 was deemed "First Mother Queen of Oregon Pioneers". She lived to be 121 years old (as recorded in the Washington County Courthouse). * William Jolly, Sr. was born May 9, 1781. He immigrated to Virginia in 1791; was taken prisoner by the Cherokee Indians in 1791 where he remained captive until 1797 and then made his way to Oregon in 1850. He died December 31, 1862. * Desire C. Griffin, born in Boston became a Missionary to Native Tribes in 1839. She was the first white woman (July 1841) and mother (11/1842) in the Tualatin Settlement. She journeyed with her husband; Rev John S. Griffin, who organized the First Congregational Church west of the Rocky Mountains. My ancestors are buried within the Pioneer Cemetery: Ballard / Greer / Hare; not all their graves are recorded, making some lost forever. If plot owners' names are available, I've included "unknowns" under "Multiple plot owners". This may be of some help to those searching. There are three sections to the cemetery: E = east I.O.O.F. / M = Masonic / W = west I.O.O.F. There are so many other contributors to this project, but unfortunately, I do not know their names. Good luck in your search, Vicki Greer Oliver
