The Man Without a Country
Author Info: Edward Everett Hale
Breathes there the man with soul so dead,
Who never to himself hath said,
'This is my own, my native land!'
Whose heart hath ne'er within him burn'd As home his footsteps he hath turn'd
From wandering on a foreign strand?
If such there breathe, go, mark him well;
For him no Minstrel raptures swell; High though his titles, proud his name,
Boundless his wealth as wish can claim;
Despite those titles, power, and pelf, The wretch, concentred all in self, Living, shall forfeit fair renown, And, doubly dying, shall go down To the vile dust from whence he sprung, Unwept, unhonour'd, and unsung. Innominatus Sir Walter Scott Back in 1973, when I was a mere lad of 11, Cliff Robertson starred in a TV movie of the Week version of Edward Everett Hale's great novella, The Man Without a Country. I watched transfixed. My Mom also had a tattered copy of the book which we immediately read; it had presumably been her Dad's, a former Merchant Marine. Ever since, this patriotic haunting tale has been one of my favorites. Edward Everett Hale, a descendant of Nathan Hale and a leading Unitarian clergyman of his time, tells the story of Philip Nolan, a young man enamored of the charismatic Aaron Burr. He participates in Burr's mystery shrouded empire building scheme, for which Burr was charged with treason. While Burr and the other leaders escape punishment, Nolan is convicted. When the presiding judge offers him an opportunity to prove his loyalty to the United States, Nolan replies in fury:

    Nathan Hale (1755 - 1776)
    By Rev. Edward Everett Hale (1822 - 1909) N athan H ale , a martyr soldier of the American Revolution, was born in Coventry, Conn., June 6, 1755. When but little more than twenty-one years old he was hanged, by order of General William Howe, as a spy, in the city of New York, on September 22, 1776. At the great centennial celebration of the Revolution, and the part which the State of Connecticut bore in it, an immense assembly of the people of Connecticut, on the heights of Groton, took measures for the erection of a statue in Hale’s honor. Their wish has been carried out by their agents in the government of the State. A bronze statue of Hale is in the State Capitol. Another bronze statue of him has been erected in the front of the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford. Another is in the city of New York. Nathan Hale’s father was Richard Hale, who had emigrated to Coventry, from Newbury, Mass., in 1746, and had married Elizabeth, the daughter of Joseph Strong. By her he had twelve children, of whom Nathan was the sixth. See

    The President's Words: A Selection of Passages From the Speeches,
    Addresses, and Letters of Abraham Lincoln.

    Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the sixteenth president of the
    United States.Among America's heroes, Lincoln continues to have
    a unique appeal to many Americans and for people of other lands.
    This charm derives from his remarkable life story - the rise from
    humble origins, the dramatic death - and from his distinctly human
    and humane personality as well as from his historical role as savior
    of the Union and emancipator of the slaves. Much of Lincoln's character is conveyed to us from his skillful use
    of words and remarkable oratory, as witnessed by his "Gettysburg
    Address," where in only a few sentences Lincoln conveyed the deep tragedy of the CivilWar. Interestingly, Lincoln's co-speaker at Gettysburg was Edward Everett (1794-1865), the uncle of the compiler of this book, Edward Everett Hale, who, in turn, was a decendant of the great American Revolutionary War patriot, Nathan Hale (1755-1766). If Everett's Gettysburg speech is remembered at all today
