Scholars and Essayists
VI. SCHOLARS AND ESSAYISTS
Literary Critics.
In the field of literary criticism the work of Edwin Percy Whipple (1819-1886) was notable. He was the author of several volumes of scholarly essays including Literature and Life Literature of the Age of Elizabeth (1869), and American Literature, and Other Papers (1887). Horace E. Scudder (1838- 1902), long associated with the publication of the Atlantic Monthly , he succeeded Aldrich as its editor in 1890, was an indefatigable writer, the extent of whose service to American letters is hardly understood, since much of his work was anonymous. Henry N. Hudson Richard Grant White William James Rolfe (1827-1910), and Horace Howard Furness (1833-1912) are to be remembered for their services in the criticism and interpretation of Shakespeare's dramas. Their scholarly editions of the plays are among the best that have been produced. The name of William Winter (1836-1917), author of Shakespeare's England (1886) and our foremost critic of the stage, may be mentioned in this connection. Personal Literary Recollections appeared in 1909.

Biographical Note
Henry Mills Alden, American writer and editor for 50 years of Harper's Magazine and descendent of John and Priscilla Alden of the Mayflower fame, was born in Mount Tabor, Vermont, on 3 November 1836. In 1853 he entered Williams College, where his fellow students included James A. Garfield, John J. Ingalls, and Horace E. Scudder. After attending Williams, Alden spent three years at Andover Theological Seminary. Though he never entered the ministry, he often served as preacher at neighborhood parishes. Alden's literary career began while he was in the seminary with the acceptance of two articles by the Atlantic Monthly . The articles, one of which was on the Eleusinian Mysteries, had been sent, unbeknownst to him, to the

The Sophia Smith Collection's family papers are rich sources on women's suffrage, the abolition of slavery, social reform, education, and travel as well as windows on family life in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The families vary in size from large clans to small households and are mostly middle class and from the New England region of the United States. Most of the families feature prominent women who participated in activities both within and outside the home. The collections listed below are open to research according to the guidelines of the Sophia Smith Collection. There are a few collections of family papers that are not listed because they are closed due to donor restrictions. Blake Family Papers (1872-1958), .25 linear ft. (1 box) View Finding Aid
