He said "Just let me try."
They said, "Other men have tried and failed,"
He answered, "But not I."
They said, "It is impossible,"
He said, "There's no such word." He closed his mind, he closed his heart... To everything he heard. He said, "Within the heart of man, There is a tiny seed. It grows until it blossoms, It's called the will to succeed. Its roots are strength, its stem is hope, Its petals inspiration, Its thorns protect its strong green leaves, With grim determination.

Quotes on self-knowledge and self-improvement
At Christmas
A man is at his finest towards the finish of the year;
He is almost what he should be when the Christmas season's here;
Then he's thinking more of others than be's thought the months before,
And the laughter of his children is a joy worth toiling for.
He is less a selfish creature than at any other time;
When the Christmas spirit rules him he comes close to the sublime.
When it's Christmas man is bigger and is better in his part;
He is keener for the service that is prompted by the heart.
All the petty thoughts and narrow seem to vanish for awhile And the true reward he's seeking is the glory of a smile. Then for others he is toiling and somehow it seems to me That at Christmas he is almost what God wanted him to be. If I had to paint a picture of a man I think I'd wait Till he'd fought his selfish battles and had put aside his hate. I'd not catch him at his labors when his thoughts are all of pelf, On the long days and the dreary when he's striving for himself.

left you and me to God...I need it as bad as you do! lol! You thought I would never admit that didn't you...must have been that prayer I did cuz it is working already...with side benefits! I also keep humbly reminding myself that we all ended up in ancient Bactria for self righteousness and bad acting...so of course I need to listen too...thieves and bandits eh? Okay I will add those two sins to the big list I already have to scrutinize my actions with...what a loooong list we all have.....who started this nasty list?...oh yeah....Adam and certain ancestors which we will not name.....:D

Christmas Poetry
Question
I am looking for poems to feature on my poetry site next month. Can you suggest any poems about Christmas or set at Christmastime? I'm trying to avoid the "greeting card" varietylooking for more literary poems.
Answer Gale: 1967. It has about 60 Christmas poems, ranging from humorous to sentimental to religious. It's the best book I've found One librarian suggested "Christ Came Down from His Bare Tree This Year," by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. It's in his book of poetry, "A Coney Island of the Mind." It's a beatnik poem from half a century ago, but it has a good message about how commercial Christmas has become. Please send me the URL of your site.

It Couldn't Be Done Edgar Guest Somebody said that it couldn't be done, But he with a chuckle replied That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it. Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you'll never do that; At least no one ever has done it"; But he took off his coat and he took off his hat, And the first thing we knew he'd begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin, Without any doubting or quiddit He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, There are thousands to prophesy failure; There are thousands to point out to you, one by one, The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin, Just take off your coat and go to it; Just start to sing as you tackle the thing That "cannot be done," and you'll do it. OF MUSIC ARRANGED AND PUBLISHED

INTRODUCTION last revised November 13, 2003 This portion of the J.A. Parks web site contains links to information about composers and lyricists / librettists of the music arranged and published by J.A. Parks. The stimulus to develop this portion was an e-mail reference request from a Scottish researcher received three weeks after the J.A. Parks page was first posted on the web. Many of the composers and librettists in Parks' publications are "forgotten." Some are remembered today only for one or two lyrics or a single melody. Still others are of significant historical interest to be mentioned in standard reference works such as Grove s. A few are "household names." The links on this page open little "snapshots" which taken together form a mosaic of 19th and early 20th Century musical tastes and personalities. We have added two or more links for a few personalities in cases where each of the sites has information not provided by the other(s). We started the initial composition of this page in late September, 2003. We have relied primarily on searches in the major web search engines

(Edgar Albert Guest, 1881-1959)
The train of cars that Santa brought is out of kilter now;
While pa was showing how they went he broke the spring somehow.
They used to run around a trackat least they did when he
Would let me take them in my hands an' wind 'em with a key.
I could 'a' had some fun with 'em, if only they would go,
But, gee! I never had a chance, for pa enjoyed em so.
The automobile that I got that ran around the floor
Was lots of fun when it was new, but it won't go no more.
Pa wound it up for Uncle Jim to show him how it went, And when those two got through with it the runnin' gear was bent, An' now it doesn't go at all. I mustn't grumble though, 'Cause while it was in shape to run my pa enjoyed it so. I've got my blocks as good as new, my mitts are perfect yet; Although the snow is on the ground I haven't got em wet. I've taken care of everything that Santa brought to me, Except the toys that run about when wound up with a key. But next year you can bet I won't make any such mistake; I'm going to ask for toys an' things that my pa cannot break.

A TOAST TO THE MEN
EDGAR ALBERT GUEST (1881-1959) Here's to the men! Since Adam's time
They've always been the same;
Whenever anything goes wrong,
The woman is to blame.
From early morn to late at night,
The men fault-finders are;
They blame us if they oversleep,
Or if they miss a car.
They blame us if, beneath the bed, Their collar buttons roll; They blame us if the fire is out Or if there is no coal. They blame us if they cut themselves While shaving, and they swear That we're to blame if they decide To go upon a tear. Here's to the men, the perfect men! Who never are at fault; They blame us if they chance to get The pepper for the salt. They blame us if their business fails, Or back a losing horse; And when it rains on holidays The fault is ours, of course. They blame us when they fall in love, And when they married get; Likewise they blame us when they're sick, And when they fall in debt. For everything that crisscross goes They say we are to blame;

he current issue of Poetry (April, 2004) contains a debate between Dana Gioia and August Kleinzahler over Garrison Keillor's book, Good Poems , a selection of poems Keillor read on his daily Writers Almanac program. A number of my friends have written poems which have been read aloud by Garrison Keillor. The most recent of these was Robert Sward's "God is In the Cracks" from Rosicrucian in the Basement "Just a tiny crack separates this world from the next, and you step over it every day, God is in the cracks." Foot propped up, nurse hovering, phone ringing. "Relax and breathe from your heels. Now, that's breathing. So, tell me, have you enrolled yet?" "Enrolled?" "In the Illinois College of Podiatry." "Dad, I have a job. I teach." "Ha! Well, I'm a man of the lower extremities." "Dad, I'm fifty-three." "So what? I'm eighty. I knew you before you began wearing shoes. Too good for feet?" he asks. "I. Me. Mind: That's all I get from your poetry. Your words lack feet. Forget the mind. Mind is all over the place. There's no support. You want me to be proud of you? Be a foot man. Here, son," he says, handing me back my shoes, "try walking in these. Arch supports. Now there's a subject. Some day you'll write about arch supports." Keillor's smooth baritone was equal to the task of Sward's poem, and he read it quite well. And, indeed, Sward's odd, funny poem is a "good poem"; Sward was later told by Keillor's staff that the poem received many favorable comments.

I'd like to be the help that you've
been always glad to be
I'd like to mean as much to you
each minute of the day
As you have meant, old friend of mine,
to me along the way.
I'd like to do the big things
and the splendid things for you,
To brush the gray from out your skies and leave them only blue I'd like to say the kindly things that I so oft have heard, And feel that I could rouse your soul the way that mine you've stirred. I'd like to give you back the joy that you have given me, Yet that were wishing you a need I hope will never be I'd like to make you feel as rich as I, who travel on Undaunted in the darkest hours with you to lean upon. I'm wishing at this blessed time that I could but repay A portion of the gladness that you've strewn along my way; And could I have one wish this year, this only would it be: I'd like to be the sort of friend that you have been to me.
