Saving your own Garden Seed
Greetings gardeners!
As if you did not have enough to do in the garden at this time of the year, we thought that we might spark your interest in a hobby that has been in existence for thousands of years and has recently made quite a comeback. Saving seeds from plants that you have grown can be quite rewarding, very educational, and most of all, fun!
Why Save Seeds?
There are a multitude of reasons why home gardeners are interested in saving seeds. One of the most common reasons is that many gardeners, worldwide, are striving to be self-sufficient. A huge undertaking in the process of self-sufficiency is to grow your own food. By collecting seed to replant the following season, you are taking it one step further.
On that same note, it is very rewarding to be involved in the entire ''circle of life'' in your garden. The glory of harvesting a bounty of food from a few packets of seeds is truly indescribable. Imagine how much more fulfilling it is to collect the seed and make the circle complete!
A major concern in the seed world today deals with multinational corporations buying out family-owned seed companies. Along with these takeovers, comes the loss of several unique open-pollinated varieties that are replaced with standard, easy-to-produce hybrids. According to Suzanne Ashworth, author of Seed to Seed, from 1984-1987 the closure of 54 mail-order seed companies resulted in over 940 open-pollinated plant varieties to become unavailable. In order to preserve the diversity in seed varieties, it is essential that both family-owned seed companies, like Territorial Seed Company, and the home gardener continue to produce and save these seeds. The result: a wealth of good-tasting, nutritious food that we can enjoy and pass down to future generations.

24. Organic Gardening
So have you read Steve Solomon s book Growing vegetables west of the Cascades? Growing some of your own organic fruits, vegetables and flowers is healthy
http://www.televar.com/~maryse/garden.htm
Organic Gardening in the Pacific NW
This page is aimed at gardeners who are either new to this region or just starting. So have you read Steve Solomon's book Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades It's at the library, check it out! At the very least, get yourself a copy of the Territorial Seed Company catalogan amazing resource! Seeds produced for this region are better adapted and will produce more reliably here. Growing some of your own organic fruits, vegetables and flowers is healthy for your family and the Earth! Better taste is often the only reason some folks grow a garden! Of course you also avoid the dangerous chemicals commonly used to grow produce. Not only is the end product of organic, clean produce healthier to eat, but also the process of gardening reduces stress and provides moderate exercise. As the ancient Chinese proverb goes: "If you want to be happy for a day, get drunk, if you want to be happy for a year, get married, if you want to be happy for your entire life, grow a garden!"

So, what can we grow around here and how?

25. Complete Organic Fertilizer For The Pacific Northwest - Rainyside.com
Growing vegetables west of the Cascades The Complete this book as the author is the one that developed the recipe for the complete organic fertilizer.
http://www.rainyside.com/resources/fertilizer.html
Resources
Complete Organic Fertilizer
Steve Solomon developed this fertilizer mixture specifically for growing in our maritime climate. It is best to buy in bulk as it is far cheaper in the long haul than buying the small boxes of fertilizer. Store in metal galvanized garbage cans and keep moisture out.
Four parts seed meal (cottonseed or canola meal is usually readily available here in the Northwest.)
½ part lime in equal amounts of agricultural lime and dolomite.
½ part phosphate rock or bone meal (for vegetarians phosphate rock would be the obvious choice).
    ½ part kelp meal.
You won't need to be precise when measuring this out. The seed meal and lime are most important ingrediants and as you build your supply of fertilizer you can add the latter ingrediants as you can afford them. You can mix them all at once or store them seperately and mix what you need as you use them. In the Plant and Gallery Guide most of the plants listed there I recommend using a complete organic fertilizer. This is the formula I recommend. For more information see West Side Gardener where Travis goes into much more detail about this fertilizer for the Pacific Northwest.

Review #1 Deserves 10 stars! Review #2 gardening in a less-than-perfect world Review #3 The world is less than perfect....
Straight-Ahead Organic Review #1 Deserves 10 stars! At last! An instruction journal for us 'Organic Nerds'! And in plain, understandable terminology. When it is advertised as covering 50 years of gardening (the right way) experience, you can take that to the bank! It was a revelation to read that some of the concepts I had been using for years, actually have merit. I knew they had worked for me, but it is always nice to be validated. If you can only purchase one gardening manual, this is the one to buy. It covers everything and because the methods are tried and true, you can feel confident following Ogdens' suggestions. I can remember when, years ago, neighbors thought me barmy for directly composting kitchen waste(sans meat products). I am vindicated!
Straight-Ahead Organic Review #2 gardening in a less-than-perfect world Shepherd Ogden's Step-by-step guide to growing vegetables is a great companion to the Ogden's other bookThe Cook's Garden and their catalog by the same name. The Ogden's practice what they preach and it shows in the solid recommendations for planting and preparing freshly harvested greens and veggies. Any gardener understands that the challenges we all face are precisely because we are living and gardening in a less-than-perfect and highly unpredictable world. Shep's suggestions and guidance will definately help even those of us who have been gardening for a lifetime to find greater success.

    Organic Fertilizer Mix
A balanced and economical long-release fertilizer by Trevor Inkpen
WANTED: Looking for a stable, non-chemical soil-mate interested in a long-term relationship with earthy partner. Non-burning, non-salty. Soluble flash-in-the-pan types need not apply. In the natural state, our soil contains all the nutrients required to grow the plants native to our area. When an old tree falls, its body is consumed by insects, fungus and bacteria, and the nutrients are returned to the soil to nourish the next generation. Over hundreds and thousands of years, the local ecology evolves to a balance of requirements and additions: the flow of nutrients is circular and replenishes itself. The problem starts when we clear the land and plant crops or gardens. The trees are burned or turned into houses, paper or toothpicks, the weeds are carted off to the dump. Then we plant crops, and carry away the harvest. Nothing gets returned to the soil. Add the effects of runoff from soil exposed to the rain and artificial irrigation, and pretty soon the soil has been depleted of its balanced reserve of nutrients. In order for our gardens to thrive, we must feed the soil with what we have taken out.

Did you think that tomatoes were not in this country before the 1880s? And did you think that this was because they were considered to be poisonous or aphrodisiacal? Since 1987, writer and lecturer Smith has been researching references to tomatoes. After examining 50,000 sources, which he says does not by any means exhaust the material, Smith traces the history of this most popular fruit/vegetable-one that is now grown by more Gardening gardeners in this country than any other food.
