Grimm Brothers
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859), were born in Hanau, near Frankfurt, in the German state of Hesse. Throughout their lives they remained close friends, and both studied law at Marburg University. Jacob was a pioneer in the study of German philology, and although Wilhelm's work was hampered by poor health the brothers collaborated in the creation of a German dictionary, not completed until a century after their deaths. But they were best (and universally) known for the collection of over two hundred folk tales they made from oral sources and published in two volumes of Nursery and Household Tales in 1812 and 1814. Although their intention was to preserve such material as part of German cultural and literary history, and their collection was first published with scholarly notes and no illustration, the tales soon came into the possession of young readers. This was in part due to Edgar Taylor, who made the first English translation in 1823, selecting about fifty stories "with the amusement of some young friends principally in view." They have been an essential ingredient of children's reading ever since.

WILHELM CARL GRIMM
GRIMM, WILHELM CARL His first work was a spirited translation of the Danish Kcempeviser, Altdanische Heldenlieder, published in 1811-1813, which made his name at first more widely known than that of his brother. The most important of his text editions areRuolandslied (Gottingen, 1838); Konrad von Wi/rzburgs Goldene Schmiede (Berlin, 1840); Grave Ruodolf (Gottingen, 1844, 2nd ed); Athis und Pro philias (Berlin, 1846); Altdeutsche Gesprache (Berlin, 1851); Freidank (Gottingen, 1860, 2nd ed.). Of his other works the most important is Deutsche Heldensage (Berlin, 1868, 2nd ed.). His Deutsche Runen (Gottingen, 1821) has now only an historical interest. (H. Sw.) La colección, aumentada en 1857, es conocida como Cuentos de hadas de los hermanos Grimm . Los hermanos colaboraron en muchos otros libros. Once upon a time there lived in Germany two brothers who loved a good storyone with magic and danger, royalty and rogues. Such lasting fame would have shocked the humble Grimms. During their lifetimes the collection sold modestly in Germany, at first only a few hundred copies a year. The early editions were not even aimed at children. The brothers initially refused to consider illustrations, and scholarly footnotes took up almost as much space as the tales themselves.
Jacob and Wilhelm viewed themselves as patriotic folklorists, not as entertainers of children.
