Green, Anna Katharine
(1846-1935), mystery writer Born on November 11, 1846, in Brooklyn, New York, Anna Green graduated from Ripley Female College (now Green Mountain College) in Poultney, Vermont, in 1866. Her early poetic ambitions were bolstered by a meeting with Ralph Waldo Emerson. Her first book, however, was something entirely different: a detective tale entitled The Leavenworth Case (1878), which sold more than 150,000 copies. Edgar Allan Poe and Wilkie Collins were virtually her only predecessors in the writing of such fiction; her fictional detective, Ebenezer Gryce, anticipated in some respects the later Sherlock Holmes. A Strange Disappearance (1880) and Hand and Ring (1883) followed, and after publishing two largely ignored volumes of verse, she returned permanently to detective novels. Among Green's mysteries were Behind Closed Doors Forsaken Inn Marked "Personal" The Doctor, His Wife, and the Clock The Affair Next Door Lost Man's Lane The Filigree Ball The House in the Mist The Woman in the Alcove The House of the Whispering Pines (1910), and

The Millionaire Baby
Anna Katharine Green
This is an early mystery story in which a child is missing and believed to be kidnaped and our sleuth, down on his luck, has high hopes of solving the crime, returning the child to her family and collecting $50,000 as a reward ? a big sum in 1900. The author was one of the first American women to write detective stories; she Influenced the genre and was very popular in her time. Green (1846-1935) is often called "the mother of the detective story." A contemporary reviewer sated that Green had "proved herself able to write an interesting story of mysterious crime as well as any man living." In fact, when her first novel, The Leavenworth Case appeared, the New York papers assumed the author was a man. This work employed a number of devices that would become staples of the genre; a map of the scene of the crime, clues, suspects, lists of deductions and possibilities, expert testimony, etc. In addition to her famous detective Gryce, she introduced two female sleuths of note; Miss Amelia Butterworth ( a prototype for Miss Marple) and Violet Strange, (a prototype for Nancy Drew.)
