HIRAM ULYSSES GRANT Ulysses S. Grant, 18th president, Republican, was born at Point Pleasant, Ohio, April 27, 1822, son of Jesse R. Grant , a tanner, and Hannah Simpson . Grant was named Hiram Ulysses, but on entering West Point, 1839, his name was entered as Ulysses Simpson and he adopted it. The following is a note written by Grant to one of his doctors just prior to his death: "If I live long enough I will become a sort of specialist in the use of certain medicines if not in the treatment of disease. It seems that one mans destiny in this world is quite as much a mystery as it is likely to be in the next. I never thought of acquiring rank in the profession I was educated for; yet it came with two grades higher prefixed to the rank of General officer for me. I certainly never had either ambition or taste for political life; yet I was twice president of the United States. If any one had suggested the idea of my becoming an author, as they frequently did, I was not sure whether they were making sport of me or not. I have now written a book which is in the hands of the manufacturers. I ask that you keep these notes very private lest I become an authority on the treatment of diseases. I have already too many trades to be proficient in any.

Back to Important People Back to Homepage Back to Timeline Ulysses S. Grant I n September, 1861 M. Harrison Strong, of the 72nd Illinois Regiment, was ordered to report to Grant's chief of staff, John Rawlins. Harrison Strong had fought under Grant at Donelson, Shiloh and Vicksburg, but he had never seen the General anywhere. This was about to change, as Rawlins detailed the Corporal to be acting adjutant on Grant's staff. Below are Harrison Strong's words about Ulysses Grant: I was just a boy when I met General Grant in 1863. I looked at him and he impressed me as a gentleman the first time I saw him. He was a nice man, a good man, a gentleman in every sense of the word. He impressed me as a man of great power and of latent force, and a man who was very well balanced and never flurried. A man who who always knew exactly what he wanted to do without any hesitation. T he first days I would hand him dispatches and he would answer them rapidly, without being annoyed by outside conversation. He was never in a hurry. Let me give an example: Grant had a black body servant named Bill at this time and he annoyed me a good deal. He slipped in one day

Another name for Ulysses was STATES, 18th President Of The United. General Notes: Ulysses S. Grant
Late in the administration of Andrew Johnson, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant quarreled with the President and aligned himself with the Radical Republicans. He was, as the symbol of Union victory during the Civil War, their logical candidate for President in 1868.
When he was elected, the American people hoped for an end to turmoil. Grant provided neither vigor nor reform. Looking to Congress for direction, he seemed bewildered. One visitor to the White House noted "a puzzled pathos, as of a man with a problem before him of which he does not understand the terms."
Born in 1822, Grant was the son of an Ohio tanner. He went to West Point rather against his will and graduated in the middle of his class. In the Mexican War he fought under Gen. Zachary Taylor.

Customer Reviews Whatever history has to say about US Grant, the president, there's a reason why his NYC memorial was the most visited American landmark until the Washington Momument was completed. It should fool no one that Grant's memoirs, written under financial pressure, and completed only days before throat cancer killed him, have become part of the American canon. If you've ever seen those upright potraits of this man, his frill-less diction and clarity will not surprise. Despite hailing from another time, this is a remarkably quick read.
