Ulysses S. Grant - 18th President of the United States
Portrait of U.S. Grant, President of the United States (National Archives) Ulysses Simpson Grant (1822-1885), American soldier, and eighteenth president of the United States, was born at Point Pleasant, Ohio, on the 27th of April 1822. He was a descendant of Matthew Grant, a Scotchman, who settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1630. His earlier years were spent in helping his father, Jesse R. Grant, upon his farm in Ohio. In 1839 he was appointed to a place in the military academy at West Point. He was christened Hiram, after an ancestor, with Ulysses for a middle name. As he was usually called by his middle name, the congressman who recommended him for West Point supposed it to be his first name, and added thereto the name of his mother's family, Simpson. Grant was the best horseman of his class, and took a respectable place in mathematics, but at his graduation in 1843 he only ranked twenty-first in a class of thirty-nine. In September 1845 he went with his regiment to join the forces of General Taylor in Mexico; there he took part in the battles of Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma and Monterey, and, after his transfer to General Scott's army, which he joined in March 1847, served at Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, Churubusco, Molino del Rey and at the storming of Chapultepec. He was breveted first lieutenant for gallantry at Molino del Rey and captain for gallantry at Chapultepec. In August 1848, after the close of the war, he married Julia T. Dent (1826-1902), and was for a while stationed in California and Oregon, but in 1854 he resigned his commission. His reputation in the service had suffered from allegations of intemperate drinking, which, whether well founded or not, certainly impaired his usefulness as a soldier.

Javascript is either disabled or not supported by this browser. This page may not appear properly. Birthplace: Point Pleasant, Ohio Senior Command: General in Chief of the Union Army, 1864-1865 As a young infantry officer, Grant served in Missouri and Louisiana and fought in the Mexican War. In 1848 he married Julia Dent and looked ahead to a life of routine in the regular army. But Grant failed miserably as a peacetime soldier. Bored, lonely, and increasingly addicted to drink, he resigned under pressure in 1854. Grant fared little better in civil life. He moved from job to job, at one point selling firewood in the streets of St. Louis. In 1860, with nowhere else to turn, he went to work as a clerk in his brother's dry goods store in Galena, Illinois. The 1864 battles cost the Army of the Potomac 66,000 casualties between May4 and June 19half the army's strength at the outset of the campaignbut Grant refused to turn away from his goal. With simplicity and directness of purpose, he pursued his strategy to the end: destruction of the Confederate armies, one by one. Grant's two presidential terms were marred by scandal and corruption on a grand scale. No one ever suggested Grant himself had stolen while in office; in fact, he left the White House with a modest net worth of only a few thousand dollars. But he knew one final triumphthe completion, just before his death on July 23, 1885, of his Personal Memoirs, a best-seller in its time and an enduring classic of Civil War literature.

"When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging," said Grant who was made a major Civil War general by Abraham Lincoln in 1864 after he captured the important city of Vicksburg, Mississippi and 30,000 Confederate troops. Grant was a brilliant strategist who said, "I am terribly afraid, but the other fellow is afraid, too." After a long battle at Petersburg, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant in 1865. "I felt like anything rather than rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause," Grant wrote in his memoirs, published posthumously by Mark Twain After the war, Grant easily won election to the U.S.

Grant's Last Battle
Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), born in southwestern Ohio, knew how to do one thing and do it well: he could fight. In Grant, President Lincoln found the general he had been looking for to lead the Union to victory in the Civil War. But after the war was over, and after the Presidential term of U.S. Grant was over, there was one last battle to fight. Even as he slowly succumbed to painful cancer, Grant fought to write his own account of the Civil War, something that would earn enough money to support his family. The book became a bestseller. Rick Sowash tells his story in Chapter 9 of Heroes of Ohio: 23 True Tales of Courage and Character (Bowling Green, Ohio: Gabriel's Horn Publishing Co., 1998).

Ohio; commanded at the time by Captain Schenck, of the navy. It had not been determined, until a day or two before starting, that the 4th infantry should go by the Ohio; consequently, a complement of passengers had already been secured. The addition of over seven hundred to this list crowded the steamer most uncomfortably, especially for the tropics in July. In eight days Aspinwall was reached. At that time the streets of the town were eight or ten inches under water, and foot passengers passed from place to place on raised foot-walks. July is at the height of the wet season, on the Isthmus. At intervals the rain would pour down in streams, followed in not many minutes by a blazing, tropical summers sun. These alternate changes, from rain to sunshine, were continuous in the afternoons. I wondered how any person could live many months in Aspinwall, and wondered still more why any one tried. In the summer of 1852 the Panama railroad was completed only to the point where it now crosses the Chagres River. From there passengers were carried by boats to Gorgona, at which place they took mules for Panama, some twenty-five miles further. Those who traveled over the Isthmus in those days will remember that boats on the Chagres River were propelled by natives not inconveniently burdened with clothing. These boats carried thirty to forty passengers each. The crews consisted of six men to a boat, armed with long poles. There were planks wide enough for a man to walk on conveniently, running along the sides of each boat from end to end. The men would start from the bow, place one end of their poles against the river bottom, brace their shoulders against the other end, and then walk to the stern as rapidly as they could. In this way from a mile to a mile and a half an hour could be made, against the current of the river.

Famous Civil War Generals General Ulysses S. Grant
Birthplace: Point Pleasant, Ohio
Commander: General in Chief of the Union Army (1864-1865)
Born a tanner's son, Hiram Ulysses Grant faced tough odds from the beginning. He was involved in school on an off through the age of seventeen, feeling indifferent about it from the beginning. A gifted horse-handler, he grew up and learned to love nature and animals and later on gained a disapproval of killing them for sport - even for food. His known name of Ulysses S. Grant was as it appeared upon his arrival at West Point in 1839, so he later dropped Hiram altogether and adopted his mother's maiden name instead. His years at West Point went by rather undistinguished in and of it self, and he graduated 21st in his class of 39 in 1843. As an infantry officer, he served in the Mexican War throughout Missouri and Louisiana. Trying to live the life of a regular routine army man (marrying Julia Dent), Grant quickly found himself bored. He turned to drinking and found himself resigning under pressure from the military. From then on, he went on to serve multiple jobs - years Grant would later reflect on as 'bitter'.

http://www.nationalcenter.org/USGrant.html
Reasons for Being a Republican by Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) September 28, 1880 Delivered by the retired president before a Republican gathering in Warren, Ohio. IN view of the known character of the speaker who is to address you to-day, and his long public career, and association with the leading statesmen of this country for the past twenty years, it would not be becoming in me to detain you with many remarks of my own. But it may be proper for me to account to you on the first occasion of my presiding at political meetings for the faith that is in me. I am a Republican, as the two great political parties are now divided, because the Republican party is a national party seeking the greatest good for the greatest number of citizens. There is not a precinct in this vast nation where a Democrat can not cast his ballot and have it counted as cast. No matter what the prominence of the opposite party, he can proclaim his political opinions, even if he is only one among a thousand, without fear and without proscription on account of his opinions. There are fourteen States, and localities in some other States, where Republicans have not this privilege. This is one reason why I am a Republican. But I am a Republican for many other reasons. The Republican party assures protection to life and property, the public credit, and the payment of the debts of the government, State, county, or municipality, so far as it can control. The Democratic party does no promise this; if it does, it has broken its promises to the extent of hundreds of millions, as many Northern Democrats can testify to their sorrow. I am a Republican, as between the existing parties, because it fosters the production of the field and farm, and of manufactories, and it encourages the general education of the poor as well as the rich.

On duelling:
"I do not believe I ever would have the courage to fight a duel. If any man should wrong me to the extent of my being willing to kill him, I would not be willing to give him the choice of weapons with which it should be done, and of the time, place and distance separating us, when I executed him. If I should do another such a wrong as to justify him in killing me, I would make any reasonable atonement within my power, if convinced of the wrong done. I place my opposition to duelling on higher grounds than any here stated. No doubt a majority of the duels fought have been for want of moral courage on the part of those engaged to decline."

ULYSSES S. GRANT
"Grant: a biography" by William S. McFeely.
Published by: Norton,Ww
Ulysses Simpson Grant, (1822-1885), American general and 18th President of the United States. Grant, the most capable of the Union generals during the Civil War, was a master strategist. He won the first major Union victories. President Abraham Lincoln staunchly defended him against critics and promoted him to command all Union forces. Grant accepted Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. However, Grant had no disposition for political leadership, and as president (1869-1877) he scarcely attempted to control events. He made injudicious appointments to public office, and official corruption tainted his administration, although Grant himself was not involved in the peculations.
Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822, and baptized Hiram Ulysses. The eldest son of Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson Grant, he came from a family that, he proudly declared, had been American "for generations, in all its branches, direct and collateral." In 1823 his father moved his tanning business to Georgetown, Ohio, where "Lyss" spent his boyhood. His education at a grammar school in Georgetown, at Maysville Seminary in Maysville, Ky., and at the Presbyterian Academy of Ripley, Ohio, was superficial and repetitious, and the boy showed no scholarly bent. He became noted, however, for his sturdy self-reliance and for his ability to ride and control even the wildest horses.
