BNB name headings listed by frequency of occurrence
The frequency listing is intended as a means of tracing name headings according to how often they occur in BNB records created between 1996 and April 2003:
  • Headings are listed starting with those that occur most often. An item number has been assigned to each heading. The arrow indicates when a BNB heading is different to its NACO equivalent (shown in the alphabetical sequence) and is therefore a candidate for amendment. The number of records in which a heading occurs is shown in brackets. Headings that occur in the same number of records are arranged alphabetically and item numbers assigned accordingly. Headings are presented in sequences of one hundred.
  • The extent to which BNB headings are represented in users' catalogues will depend on record selection so that they may be less frequent than indicated here.

The Wind in the Willows (E)
“A book for those who keep the spirit of youth alive in them; of life, sunshine, running water, woodlands, dusty roads, winter firesides” said author Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) about his children’s book The Wind in the Willows . Initially, he wrote the stories about Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad to read to his visually handicapped son Alistair, but after the publication in book form in 1908, it became a worldwide success. It was later also turned into a film and a television series. What appeals to me most is the friendly, very cosy atmosphere that Grahame has managed to create with his optimistic narrative style full of high spirits, an atmosphere that reminds me of my own carefree youth. It was therefore a great pleasure to set this book to music! The four movements successively describe: I) The River The river, which flows through the habitat of the animals like a lifeline, regularly is the scene of pleasant boat trips and picnics. The animals lead their untroubled lives here. The four-tone main motif [A-C-D-C] is extensively presented by the brass section, and returns in the following movements as a countermelody.

1.Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) (1832-1898
Lewis Carroll, as he is better known, was born in Daresbury, near Warrington, Lancashire, and was educated at a private school in Richmond, Yorkshire, before going on to Rugby School in 1846 and Christ Church, Oxford, in 1851. And there he remained, as a Fellow of the College. His first book for children, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland , appeared in 1865. It was devised to amuse the daughter of the dean of his college. It portrays Alice as a no-nonsense, confident little girl, possessed of considerable common sense, caught up in entirely fantastic - today we might say surreal - adventures. Its sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass , was published in 1871. Find out more about Lewis Carroll Find out more about Alice in Wonderland
    2.Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924)
was born in Manchester, England, in 1849 but moved with her widowed mother to Tennessee, USA, in 1865. She wrote for adults as well as children. Her best known children's books are Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886) and The Secret Garden The eponymous hero of Little Lord Fauntleroy is portrayed as open, loyal, trusting and courageous. He has a keen sense of fair play and is alert to the needs of the disadvantaged. In the book he unwittingly converts his self-centred and miserly grandfather - an Earl - into a compassionate landlord.

    GRAHAME, Kenneth
Born: March 8, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland Died: July 6, 1932, in Pangbourne, Berkshire, England Kenneth Grahame was a children's author and essayist. His father was an advocate and sheriff for Argyll, and a descendant of an old Scottish family. When his mother died in 1864, the Grahame children went to live with their grandmother at "The Mount" on the banks of the Thames. Grahame was educated at St. Edward's school in Oxford. He excelled at his studies and sports such as rugby and cricket. Although he wanted to attend university, his grandmother found him a job in a bank. He joined the bank of England in 1878, and was promoted to the position of secretary in 1898. He eventually retired in 1907 after being shot during a bank robbery. While working at the bank, he wrote essays and poems and verse. Most of his work was rejected by publishers until W.E. Henley published many of his children's stories in The Pagan Papers . He then when on to write stories about children meant for adult readers: The Golden Age in 1895 and Dream Days in 1898. Along with writers such as Arnold Bennett and Henry James, he contributed to
