Biographical Note
George Milbry Gould was born on 8 November 1848. He received an A.B. degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1873, and in 1874 graduated from Harvard Divinity School. In 1888 Gould received an M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College, followed a year later by an A.M. degree from Ohio Wesleyan. Gould settled in Philadelphia where he specialized in ophthalmology. In addition to his ophthalmological practice, Gould was an active writer and editor. Among his more notable accomplishments were the compilation of medical dictionaries (continued today by Blackiston's New Gould Medical Dictionary), and his editorship of the Philadelphia Medical Journal, American Medicine, and Medical News. Under Gould's direction the Association of Medical Librarians (later the Medical Library Association) was formed; additional correspondence from Gould can be found in their archives, also in the library. Gould died in Atlantic City, New Jersey on 8 August 1922 at the age of seventy-three.

92. Gerster, Arpad G[eyza] (1848-1923).
The Rules of Aseptic and Antiseptic Surgery , NY, 1888] was the first American surgical text based on Listerian principles. The book caused a furor, for at that time suppuration was considered a natural sequence of every surgical procedure. The book was immensely popular and passed through further editions in 1888 and 1891. However, its importance was not only in its content but also the efforts that were expended in its production. It was printed on heavy calendered paper with many halftone illustrations, which were then rare in scientific books. Gerster had mastered the technique of photography and made his own plates at a time when photography by an amateur was unusal" [Ira Rutkow, The History of Surgery in the United States 1775-1900 , pp. 98-99]. Weight: 2 pounds 9 ounces = 1.2 kg. SIZE: 24.5 x 16 x 4.5cm. With Smith Ely Jelliffe's bookplate.

What is an Urban Legend?
  • It's good for storytelling.
  • It appears mysteriously and spreads spontaneously in many different forms.
  • It contains humorous and/or horrific content. Horror is used to convict societal abnormalities.
  • Most are false, but not all! Urban legends often get their roots in fact, but it's their life after-the-fact that peaks their interest. What is AFU? AFU is the acronym for the alt.folklore.urban newsgroup. This is the official AFU Newsgroup archive. Here at Urbanlegends.com we hold an excellent archive of material in groups for easy browsing! News and Information: Urbanlegends.com will be undergoing extensive redesign in the next few days. Let us know what you think! Newsgroups courtesy of their respective authors
