PHILIP AND EDMUND GOSSE by John H. Lienhard Click here for audio of Episode 1864. Today, a Victorian naturalist. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. T he fervent British naturalist Philip Henry Gosse was born in 1810. He taught himself biology as he traveled Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean. Then he began writing about flora and fauna. He didn't marry until he was thirty-eight. His wife, Emily, was four years older than he, and a fine scholar. The marriage was almost painfully perfect. They shared an intense belief in a completely literal form of Christianity. They supported themselves by writing books; and they were immersed in one another. A son Edmund was born in 1849. But Emily contracted breast cancer when he was only nine, and she died, stoically, in great pain. Edmund Gosse grew up to become a great British writer and, in 1907, he published (anonymously) a book with the title, Father and Son . Finally, in the preface to the fourth printing, he said that his veil of anonymity had been shredded, and hiding his identity could henceforth be only an affectation.

The Victorian Sonnet
Much poetry of the Victorian period is no longer very highly esteemed, for reasons that seem apparent after reading a number of sonnetsa sentimental self-indulgence and what F. R. Leavis called an "inferiority, in rigour and force, of intellectual content." Yet, when looked at individually, the poems are often graceful and moving, and their worst, most conventional excesses seem no more ridiculous than the stock courtly love sequences of the 16th and 17th centuries. Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861), who wrote Sonnets from the Portuguese to her husband ( Robert Browning (1812-1889)), is probably the most genuinely popular (and critically maligned) sonneteer of this period. Other British Victorian writers included here are Thomas Hood Charles Tennyson Turner (1808-1879), and his more famous brother, Alfred, Lord Tennyson Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), best known for "Dover Beach," wrote several sonnets. George Meredith (1828-1909) wrote a lengthy sequence, Modern Love , about the ruin of his marriage. Although the sequence consisted of rhymed sixteen-line iambic pentameter poems, ever since the poet and critic Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) praised these poems as sonnets (and Meredith used the term himself in Sonnet 30 ), they have been widely accepted as specimens of the form. In addition to Meredith and Swinburne, the late 19th century

SIR EDMUND GOSSE
Revelation
INTO the silver night
She brought with her pale hand
The topaz lanthorn-light,
Around her in a band,
Ringstraked and pied, the great soft moths came flying,
The flickering flame, ascending, falling, dying. Behind the thorny pink
Saw full rose lips as rounded as the cherry,
Saw braided locks more dark than bay,
And flashing eyes decorous, pure, and merry. With food for furry friends
Till eaves and gable-ends
Hid all that saffron sheen from me: Around my rosy tree Once more the silver-starry night was shining, With depths of heaven, dewy and free, And crystals of a carven moon declining. Alas! for him who dwells In frigid air of thought, When warmer light dispels The frozen calm his spirit sought; By life too lately taught He sees the ecstatic Human from him stealing; Reels from the joy experience brought, And dares not clutch what Love was half revealing.
