Adam Lindsay Gordon (1833-70)
Brief Biography
Adam Lindsay Gordon was born in 1833 at Fayal in the Azores where his mother's father had a plantation. He completed his education in England and was sent by his family to South Australia in 1853 where he enlisted in the mounted police. He was briefly a member of Parliament and lived in Western Australia and Ballarat before moving to Melbourne. During his time in Ballarat he suffered a severe head injury in a riding accident, was bankrupted by a fire in the livery stable and lost his infant daughter. The day after the publication of his poems in Bush Ballads and Galloping Rhymes he committed suicide on Brighton Beach in Melbourne. The poems that follow are all taken from that volume. He is the only Australian poet to be honoured with a bust in the Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey in London.

Adam Lindsay Gordon: Born in 1833 at Fayel in the Azores. Son of an Officer in the English Army. It was hoped that Adam would follow in the family Army tradition. During the time he was a cadet there were no sign of any wars, so, following the trend of young men during this time he left the Army and emigrated to South Australia.
He began his life in Australia as a Sheep farmer, however his efforts in this field of work did not pay dividends, he lost his capital and left with nothing but the loves of horses and horsemanship.

THE SWIMMER by Adam Lindsay Gordon (1833 - 1870)
With short, sharp, violent lights made vivid, To southward far as the sight can roam, Only the swirl of the surges livid, The seas that climb and the surfs that comb. Only the crag and the cliff to nor'ward, And the rocks receding, and reefs flung forward, And waifs wreck'd seaward and wasted shoreward On shallows sheeted with flaming foam.
A grim, grey coast and a seaboard ghastly, And shores trod seldom by feet of men Where the batter'd hull and the broken mast lie, They have lain embedded these long years ten. Love! when we wander'd here together, Hand in hand through the sparkling weather, From the heights and hollows of fern and heather, God surely loved us a little then.
The skies were fairer and shores were firmer The blue sea over the bright sand roll'd; Babble and prattle, and ripple and murmur, Sheen of silver and glamour of gold And the sunset bath'd in the gulf to lend her A garland of pinks and of purples tender, A tinge of the sun-god's rosy splendour, A tithe of his glories manifold.
Man's works are graven, cunning, and skilful On earth, where his tabernacles are; But the sea is wanton, the sea is wilful, And who shall mend her and who shall mar? Shall we carve success or record disaster On the bosom of her heaving alabaster? Will her purple pulse beat fainter or faster For fallen sparrow or fallen star?

A LAY OF THE LOAMSHIRE HUNT CUP
"Aye, squire," said Stevens, "they back him at evens; The race is all over, bar shouting, they say; The Clown ought to beat her; Dick Neville is sweeter Than ever - he swears he can win all the way.
"A gentleman rider - well, I'm an outsider, But if he's a gent who the mischief's a jock? You swells mostly blunder, Dick rides for the plunder, He rides, too, like thunder - he sits like a rock.
"He calls 'hunted fairly' a horse that has barely Been stripp'd for a trot within sight of the hounds, A horse that at Warwick beat Birdlime and Yorick, And gave Abdelkader at Aintree nine pounds.
"They say they have no test to warrant a protest; Dick rides for a lord and stands in with a steward; The light of their faces they show him - his case is Prejudged and his verdict already secured.
"But none can outlast her, and few travel faster, She strides in her work clean away from The Drag; You hold her and sit her, she couldn't be fitter, Whenever you hit her she'll spring like a stag.
"And p'rhaps the green jacket, at odds though they back it, May fall, or there's no knowing what may turn up. The mare is quite ready, sit still and ride steady, Keep cool; and I think you may just win the Cup."

Adam Lindsay Gordon was the son of an officer in the English army, and was educated at Woolwich, in order that he might follow the profession of his family. At the time when he was a cadet there was no sign of either of the two great wars which were about to call forth the strength of English arms, and, like many other men of his day, he quitted his prospects of service and emigrated. He went to South Australia and started as a sheep farmer. His efforts were attended with failure. He lost his capital, and, owning nothing but a love for horsemanship and a head full of Browning and Shelley, plunged into the varied life which gold-mining, "overlanding", and cattle-driving affords. From this experience he emerged to light in Melbourne as the best amateur steeplechase rider in the colonies. The victory he won for Major Baker in 1868, when he rode Babbler for the Cup Steeplechase, made him popular, and the almost simultaneous publication of his last volume of poems gave him welcome entrance to the houses of all who had pretensions to literary taste.

At the western side of the Sturt and Lyons Street crossroads there is magnificent bronze statue by Evans of a horse mounted on a stone plinth.
In front, by the gutter, is a hitching post with a plaque inscribed "A.L. GORDON, AUSTRALIAN POET, 1833 - 1870."
He was a celebrated poet and horseman who set a record at Flemington when he won 3 steeplechases in an afternoon. At Mount Gambier in South Australia he performed an amazing feat on his horse at a place immortalised as Gordon's Leap'. The inscriptions around the base of the statue read: He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength:
He goeth forth to meet the armed men.
He mocketh at fear, and is not afraid,
Neither turneth he back from the sword.

LIFE IS MOSTLY FROTH AND BUBBLE
Life is mostly froth and bubble;
Two things stand like stone:
Kindness in another's trouble,
Courage in our own.
One of my relatives or a family friend inscribed those inspiring lines in my autograph book more than 70 years ago. They linger in my memory, and their message still applies today. But until now, I had no idea of the poet's name. A search of the internet has at last revealed that the verse was composed by one of Australia's most famous poets, Adam Lindsay Gordon (18331870). It's towards the end of a 180-line poem titled Ye Weary Wayfarer. Finis Exoptatus. Gordon is the only Australian poet to be honoured with a bust in the Poets' Corner of London's Westminster Abbey. Here are some brief facts about him, from Perry Middlemiss, of Melbourne, who presents a wonderful selection of Australia's greatest authors and poets on his website. Gordon, he says, was born in 1833 at Fayal in the Azores, where his mother's father had a plantation.
