Philip The Good:
Philip Goodwin on King John
Philip Goodwin looks out the window of his apartment on Manhattan's lower east side, thinking back to his first steps as an actor. "I was in high school, auditioning for the Woody Allen play Don't Drink the Water , and I ended up getting the Jackie Gleason role. It was a knuckle-head play, but for me, a mere freshman, it was very successful. Every play I did after that, my mother would say, 'Oh, it was good, but it was another Jackie Gleason part,''' Goodwin recollects. "I find it funny that during my early career, I was troubled by Jackie Gleason of all people." There would be little mistaking Goodwin for Gleason noweither at The Shakespeare Theatre, where he has performed numerous roles, or in New York, where he is currently appearing in Pericles at the Public Theatre and where he recently completed a nine-month stint in director James Lapine's Broadway revival of The Diary of Anne Frank . After a season away, Goodwin is returning to The Shakespeare Theatre to play the title role in Michael Kahn's production of

Site Map Goodwin, Thomas Thomas Goodwin was born prematurely at Rollesby, Norfolk in England. He entered Christ's College, Cambridge at age twelve, as a junior sophister, August 25, 1613. In 1619, Thomas Goodwin transferred to Catherine Hall, and the following year he was chosen Fellow, and made lecturer in the Hall as he began studying for the M. A. degree. This year was also marked by his conversion by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. Goodwin was licensed a preacher of the University in 1625, and upon the death of John Preston in 1628, he was appointed Lecturer at Trinity Church, and he began to influence the scholars and the town as had William Perkins before him. In 1630, he was awarded the B. D. degree, and two years later was presented by the king to the vicarage of Trinity. Goodwin's Works , including his most popular work, A Child of Light Walking in Darkness , are published in 12 volumes by Tanski Publications, now out of print. 88. Reflections On Bill Goodwin
Yann and Galia join me in expressing best wishes to Bill s family in the celebrationof Bill s life. John H Goodwin (cousin) 18 November 1996 (revised).
http://www.goodwinstudios.com/BGoodwin/BGoodwinRefl.html
Reflections on Bill Goodwin
From the beginning I remember Bill's wonderful zest for life. When I was a child growing up in West Van there seemed to be so many cousins. The first one I remember was Bill...that's when I learned what the word 'cousin' meant. Always a smile on his face and with a quick retort. He was older (in those days when that was both relative and important) but he seemed to have a youthful spirit. I grew up and found that it continued. I loved the big Christmas family parties, really the only time we all saw each other as a large family. We so looked forward to Bill playing the piano (playing by ear which I always admired... I would have loved to have had his talent) uplifting with all of us singing around his piano. Though not a barber-shopper, I had the requisite amount of ham in my genes to really enjoy such singing. Then there were the times with Bill at the piano and Bob at the organ ... in a way, two completely different approaches to music which, I suppose, reflected the variations within our family in approaching life. I eagerly anticipated the moments when Bill would lead us in joy. And then his kids, and Amber, and the rest just fell into barber shop harmonies. Ah, that was Christmas! I often thought that when we got a piano we could have the Christmas party at our house, and Bill would lead us in family singing. Finally it happened, many years later. At a recent birthday party for my mother at 1003 Duchess where the whole family was invited, I persuaded Bill to do his role (I don't think I asked him, just told him which, in retrospect, was probably the best thing to do). We rented an electronic keyboard and eventually he started to play and lead us in song . As he went on he got caught up in it, as did we, and it was a special and joyful time for us all, especially for Florence as she loved to sing. It was only afterwards that Bill told me he had not been looking forward to it but that he did enjoy himself. Tucker later told me that Bill had not done that since Amber's death and that he really enjoyed himself, that it brought back to him many good memories, though it was quite emotional for him. I felt good and was glad that I didn't know that when I invited him.

The John Goodwin Tower Center for Political Studies has been established to support teaching and research programs in international studies and national security policy, focusing upon the institutions that structure national and international decision-making. The Center is named in honor of SMU alumnus John G. Tower, who served as Texas' representative in the United States Senate from 1961 to 1985. His distinguished career of public service included appointments as Chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Chair of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, and strategic nuclear arms negotiator with the Soviet Union. The Tower center seeks to educate and inspire a new generation of thoughtful leaders who will emulate Senator Tower's life of service and scholarship. Through classes, seminars, public lectures, and international conferences, the Center contributes to informed debate on public policy challenges that confront our nation and the world. The Tower Center is a unique institution in American higher education because, unlike most centers where the thrust is research or graduate education, the Tower Center's focus is clearly upon the enhancement of undergraduate education within the larger research interests of a university. To foster student research, the Tower Center offers a limited number of research fellowships to undergraduate students. Recipients, designated as John G. Tower Center Undergraduate Fellows, collaborate with faculty members to develop a research project for publication or presentation to professional organizations or faculty committees. The goal of this program is to introduce undergraduates to the analysis of substantive issues, the development of research methodologies and techniques, research design, and the cultivation of theory. Fellows will receive stipends of up to $500 per semester for a maximum of four consecutive semesters.

A Talk With Brian Goodwin
JB: What have you been up to? GOODWIN: Let me preface it by saying that I've just left the Open University, and I've taken a new job down in Devon, at a place called Schumacher College. E.F. Schumacher is the guy who wrote Small is Beautiful, and this college is dedicated to education for the 21st century. It's developing concepts and methods appropriate to the issues of sustainability, ecological sensitivity, and the participatory world view. Instead of the traditional science of control we are involved in the science of participation, which is where complexity leads us, involving sensitive participation with nature. This requires cultivation of intuitive ways of knowing about wholes as well as analytical ways of knowing about parts, which takes into what mat be called a science of qualities. For me, a lot of the ferment that's going on in science is around this problem of how we deal with the subjective and the intuitive. Everybody knows that the subject is primary. 'Objectivity' is something that comes out of consensus between subjects who have agreed methods of practicing science. Scientific objectivity is a democratic consensus between practitioners of science that such and such is the case, based upon experimental method and modeling. If there's no consensus in science, there is no agreement about facts and hence no 'truth'. There's another important component of science, and that is what's philosophers refer to as realism. Scientists virtually all agree that there's a real world that's being investigated by science. Science itself, and the tools of science, are social constructs. But the methods of science address something that is real and independent of human beings. I believe in such a world. The knowledge you get from science is real knowledge about the real world. It's not absolute truth, which is never attainable; it's an approximation to it. So there's this strong element of social construction in science, but I'm not a relativist.

Four of the sons split up around 1850 and traveled their separate ways. James and Edward traveled to New Zealand and set up a large Goodwin's clan. We are in contact with a descendent there. Thomas and John settled in northern Ohio in 1850. Thomas and John are both buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Delta, Ohio as well as many of their descendents. Thomas's grandson, Pierce moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana around 1908. Another grandson, Budd, moved to Michigan. A grandaughter, Jeannette married and moved to Michigan, too. Their descendents are still living in the areas.
Starting the summer of 1999, we restarted an old family reunion which was originally held in Delta, Ohio. It was again held in Delta in June 2000. It was a small success.
The Banner of Truth Trust.
