August 1749 als Sohn des kaiserlichen Rates Johann Caspar Goethe und seiner Frau Catharina Elisabeth in Frankfurt am Main geboren. Von seinen fünf Geschwistern überlebt nur Cornelia (geb. am 7. Dezember 1750), mit der er seine Kindheit gemeinsam verbringt und ein enges Verhältnis aufbaut. Ab 1752 besucht Goethe drei Jahre lang die Frankfurter Spielschule. Mit dem Umbau des Elternhauses 1755 erhält der junge Goethe Privatunterricht. In seiner Jugend wird er Zeuge bedeutender historischer Ereignisse, u.a. die Besetzung Frankfurts durch die Franzosen 1759 oder die Krönung Josephs des Zweiten 1764. Im Oktober 1765 nahm er auf Wunsch seines Vaters ein Jurastudium in Leipzig auf. Nebenher besuchte Goethe auch philosophische und literaturgeschichtliche Vorlesungen, u.a. bei Gellert und Gottsched. Er beschäftigte sich außerdem in dieser Zeit mit Lessing und der Aufklärung sowie mit Klopstock und der Empfindsamkeit . Bei Adam F. Oeser nahm er Zeichenunterricht. Im August 1768 muß er das Studium wegen schwerer Krankheit abbrechen. Goethe kehrte daraufhin wieder ins Elternhaus zurück. Seine Genesung verzögerte sich durch einige Rückfälle bis März 1770. In dieser Zeit wird Goethe vor allem von religiöser Lektüre beeinflußt, angeregt durch Susanna Katharina von Klettenberg. Von April 1770 bis August 1771 setzt Goethe in Straßburg sein Jurastudium fort. Auch Herder hielt sich um diese Zeit in Straßburg auf.
