To do what is forbidden always has its charms, because we have an indistinct apprehension of something arbitrary and tyrannical in the prohibition. To be a spy upon Mr Falkland! That there was danger in the employment served to give an alluring pungency to the choice. I remembered the stern reprimand I had received and his terrible looks; and the recollection gave a kind of tingling sensation not altogether unallied to enjoyment. The further I advanced, the more the sensation was irresistable. ° Caleb Williams °

Mary Wollstonecraft
I do not wish them [women] to have power over men; but over themselves. Mary Wollstonecraft The divine right of husbands, like the divine right of kings, may, it is hoped, in this enlightened age, be contested without danger. Mary Wollstonecraft Probably Mary, and certainly Godwin, when he revealed her life to the public, misjudged the price she would pay for her unconventionality. But, although she was in many ways foiled by her own flaws, and even more by the shifts of cultural fashion, she tried - almost uniquely for the times - to be true to her sense of common female needs: for education and for legal and political significance, as well as for sex, affection and esteem. Janet Todd Feminist Mary Wollstonecraft (1759–1797) was a member of a group of radical intellectuals called the English Jacobins. Her book A Vindication of the Rights of Women (1792) argued equal educational opportunities for women. She married the radical activist and philosopher William Godwin in 1797 and died giving birth to a daughter, Mary (later Mary Shelley). Mary Wollstonecraft was born near London, of Irish descent. Owing to her father's thriftlessness, she had to earn her living by teaching (1778–88). With her sisters she ran a school for two years, then served for a year as a governess in Ireland and then worked for Johnson, the publisher, as reader and translator. While she was working for Johnson she met political philosopher Thomas Paine, chemist Joseph Priestley (1733–1804), and the Swiss-born Romantic artist (John) Henry Fuseli (1741–1825).

William Godwin, , political philosopher, husband of Mary Wollstonecraft , and father of Mary Shelley Godwin's works, including works of political philosophy (including An Enquiry concerning Political Justice ) and several novels (including Caleb Williams and St. Leon ), advocate religious dissent, the rule of reason, and personal freedom bordering on political anarchy. Political Justice emphasizes the relationship between systems of government and ethical philosophy? In it he argues for the ultimate perfectibility of mankind, which he believed would result when reason assumed its proper place. Existing political systems, however, failed to produce happiness, equity, or freedom: in his insistence on the corrupting power of government, Godwin went beyond Rousseau 's ? Power? Property was to be held in common and made available to the neediest?

Natural Magick (Magiae naturalis) by Giambattista della Porta An online version of Natural Magick by Giambattista della Porta, transcribed from the 1658 English Edition, and printed for Thomas Young and Samual Speed. The text chronicles the origins of ancient magic (also referred to as 'the natural sciences'), the definition of a magician throughout history and across cultures, magic's medicinal applications, plus miscellaneous material under chapter headings such as "Of the Generation of Animals", "Of the Production of New Plants", "Of Changing Metals", and "Of Physical Experiments". According to Giambattista Della Porta, Dramatist by Louise Ceorge Clubb, 1965 (which is also accessible from this site), Della Porta was a hugely influential figure in Naples around 1600. He wrote on "cryptography, horticulture, optics, mnemonics, meteorology, physics, astrology, physiognomy, mathematics, and fortification, and when he died at eighty, he was preparing a treatise in support of his claim to the invention of the telescope". Godwin, William Godwin, William, , English author and political philosopher. A minister in his youth, he was, however, plagued by religious doubts and gave up preaching in 1783 for a literary career. His Enquiry Concerning Political Justice Adventures of Caleb Williams St. Leon (1799), and Fleetwood (1805). In 1797, Godwin married Mary Wollstonecraft, who died the same year after giving birth to a daughter, Mary. He remarried in 1801 and in 1805 established a small, juvenile publishing business. His last years were an unceasing struggle against poverty and debt. Godwin's works strongly influenced his younger contemporaries, particularly Shelley , whose elopement with Mary (1814) drew from Godwin an exhibition of sternness at variance with his earlier views. However, he was later reconciled to their marriage. See biographies by F. K. Brown (1926) and E. K. Paul (2 vol., 1896; repr. 1970); studies by H. N. Brailsford (2d ed. 1951), D. H. Munro (1953), J. 'Refer them to reading, to conversation, to meditation; but teach them neither creeds nor catechisms, either moral or political.'
William Godwin Mary Wollstonecraft (who wrote the feminist classic: A Vindication of the Rights of Woman -1792), the father of Mary Shelley (the author of Frankenstein - 1818) and the father-in-law of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (who was influenced by his radical libertarianism).
Life
Having turned away from the ministry Godwin earned a living through writing and teaching. The former included short novels, biographies and newspaper pieces. In response to the fierce debate and argument around the French Revolution (from 1789 on), Godwin wanted to set out a properly philosophical and principled statement of political theory. The result was An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice which appeared in 1793. It brought him momentary fame and some wealth (a thousand guineas). He followed it up in 1794 with a novel The Adventures of Caleb Williams . Peter Marshall describes it as ‘a gripping story of flight and pursuit designed to show how "the spirit and character of the government intrudes itself into every rank of society"’. The book was hailed as a masterpiece. ‘It is not only a work of brilliant social observation, but may be considered the first thriller and the first psychological novel which anticipates the anxieties of modern existentialism’ (1993: 196).
