WILLIAM GODWIN, (1756-1836)
English philosopher, anarchist. The first mordern anarchist writer, friend of William Blake Works include: Enquiry Concerning Political Justice Caleb Williams — Vancouver Sun
Enquiry Concerning Political Justice The turning point in his career was the French Revolution, which spurred him to write his major work, Political Justice , completed in 1793. Though many were disillusioned after the early years of the Revolution, Godwin's liberalism remained intact. The publication of this work gained him a far-reaching contemporary fame. Although Godwin wrote indefatigably, only Political Justice is still a work of enduring fame. His Caleb Williams , a novel with a social purpose, is another of his works retaining some contemporary interest. (Irving Horowitz, The Anarchists , 1964, Dell Publishing)

    SUMMARY OF PRINCIPLES
The reader who would form a just estimate of the reasonings of these volumes, cannot perhaps proceed more judiciously, than by examining for himself the truth of these principles, and the support they afford to the various inferences interspersed through the work. I. The true object of moral and political disquisition, is pleasure or happiness. The primary, or earliest class of human pleasures, is the pleasures of the external senses. In addition to these, man is susceptible of certain secondary pleasures, as the pleasures of intellectual feeling, the pleasures of sympathy, and the pleasures of self-approbation. The secondary pleasures are probably more exquisite than the primary: Or, at least, The most desirable state of man, is that, in which he has access to these sources of pleasure, and is in possession of a happiness the most varied and uninterrupted. This state is a state of high civilization.

    of William Godwin
The Pickering Masters 8 Volume Set Edited by: Pamela Clemit Maurice Hindle and Mark Philp
General Introduction by: Marilyn Butler and Mark Philp The first complete edition, containing some novels which have never before appeared in scholarly editions, and some manuscript material published for the first time. William Godwin (1756-1836) was one of the foremost philosophers of his age. The publication of his monumental work on government and individual freedom, Political Justice , made him the chief philosophical exponent of English radicalism. His most famous work of fiction, Caleb Williams , is regarded by many as the first psychological thriller. Both his novels and his philosophical works were a major influence on Thomas Holcroft, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Hazlitt, Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley and on his wife, Mary Wollstonecraft.

Relatives Here you can find short biographies of people who played an important role in Mary Shelley's life:
    • her mother Mary Wollstonecraft
    • her father William Godwin
    • her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley
Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) Mary Wollstonecraft does not grow up in a very harmonious household. Her father is a heavy drinker and tyrannises her mother. As she witnesses and sometimes even tries to stop the abuse, it was perhaps inevitable that Mary would turn out to be one of the first feminists. At the age of 27, she writes her first article "Thoughts on the Education of Daughters" in 1786. It does not take long for people to recognise her for her remarkable writing skills. Besides writing original works, she also writes reviews and does translations. In earlier works, Mary Wollstonecraft writes about "the disabilities and sufferings of the English lower classes" . But in her most famous works, Mary focuses more on the oppression of women. This is the central theme of her most famous work A Vindication of the Rights of Woman . Never before were the sufferings and indignities of women so passionately described. In writing this work, Mary "had found the cause she was to pursue for the rest of her life."

A profound optimist concerning human nature, he nonetheless recognized the exploitative nature of capitalism and proposed a utopian restructuring of society whereby those who earn more than their basic needs would distribute the surplus to the needy. In his famous 1793 plea for anarchy, Godwin posited that the pursuit of happiness is the only object of personal and social ethics. In an early utilitarian leap, Godwin actually went on to argue that "Justice" requires the maximization of aggregate pleasure. His optimistic prognostics on the ultimate "perfectibility" of mankind led Malthus to respond with his dismal essay on population. Major Works of William Godwin

    William Godwin
