William Ewart Gladstone (1809 1898): a proposal of marriage
Marjie Bloy Ph.D., Senior Research Fellow, National University of Singapore
On 17 January 1839 William Gladstone sent a proposal of marriage to Catherine Glynne. The style of writing is typically Gladstonian: convoluted and often unclear. This text is taken from Philip Magnus' Gladstone: a biography (London, John Murray, 1954), pp. 38-9. [Gladstone] was with the Glynnes by moonlight in the Colosseum on 3 January 1839; and he had then an opportunity to speak to Catherine, for a moment, alone. He began to speak of his love, but Catherine would not respond. She moved away, and Gladstone blamed himself bitterly; he feared that his hopes had all been ruined. He was inhibited by his repressions from folding the girl in his arms, and taking her by surprise, and by storm. He resolved, therefore, to trust to a letter, but he postponed writing it until 17 January, two days before he was due to return home. Its breathless and tortuous style bears witness to the tumult of his emotions. The fact that he emerged more or less successfully from its second paragraph, consisting of one enormous sentence of 141 words and 18 clauses and sub-clauses, is perhaps worthy of remark: 62 Piazza di Spagna

William Ewart Gladstone (1809 1898): his work with 'fallen women'
Marjie Bloy Ph.D., Senior Research Fellow, National University of Singapore
In January 1840 Gladstone first embarked on his work of rescuing and rehabilitating London prostitutes. Gladstone seems to have been a man of intense sexuality; he was also separated from his wife for lengthy periods while he was in London or she was at Hawarden. It was usually during these periods of separation that Gladstone's rescue work increased. HCG Matthew deals with this subject in his biography, Gladstone (Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1997), pp. 90-95, from which the following section is taken. Anxiety about his political work, his friends' religion, the Oak Farm finances, and his personal problems, aggravated Gladstone's feelings. At first, during the 1840s, he relieved them by reading what he regarded as pornography - mostly Restoration poems, classical authors such as Petronius, and fabliaux (French verse fables, some of them extremely bawdy). These were all readily available in bookshops and in the libraries of friends such as Thomas Grenville. To pornography he later added conversations with prostitutes, some of whom he found beautiful and physically attractive. At first the 'rescue work' (as he called it) was an act of conventional charity done within the context of the 'engagement'. The 'engagement' was a lay

Biographical Sketch
Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Wills Wilde, born in 1854 in Dublin, Ireland, was the second son of Sir William Robert and Lady Jane Francesca Wilde. At the age of ten, Wilde entered the well-known Portora Royal School, where he excelled in Greek studies. His interest in Greek continued at Trinity College, Dublin, where John Mahaffy, an eminent Greek scholar who later took Wilde on a tour of Italy, was his tutor. Wilde was awarded a scholarship in classics from Magdalene College, Oxford, which he entered in 1874. During his fourth year at Oxford, Wilde won the prestigious Newdigate Prize for imitative poetry with a verse praising Ravenna, a city he had visited with Mahaffy and the burial site of Dante. In addition to his studies, Wilde began to develop his role as poseur and aesthete. Wilde received his BA in 1878 and, after an additional year at Oxford, went to London where he began writing. In 1880 Wilde published Vera; or, The Nihilists, and in 1881 he was hired by Richard D'Oyly Carte to boost Gilbert and Sullivan's new opera Patience in America by means of a lecture tour. Dressed in black velvet and a full length fur coat, he spoke on the new aestheticism from New York to San Francisco. He met with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louisa May Alcott, Walt Whitman, and Jefferson Davies, among others.

The following quotes were selected to offer some food-for-thought as we go forward after the horrific events of September 11, 2001. AMERICA A man who thinks of himself as belonging to a particular national group in America has not yet become an American.
Woodrow Wilson (1856 - 1924) Every American takes pride in our tradition of hospitality to men of all races and all creeds. We must be constantly vigilant against the attacks of intolerance and injustice. We must scrupulously guard the civil rights and civil liberties of all citizens, whatever their background. We must remember that any oppression, any injustice, any hatred, is a wedge designed to attack our civilization.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882 - 1945) We have now at last grasped the hardest of all the truths this nation has had to learn; however remote the aggression, however distant the social or economic disasters that afflict other peoples, sooner or later we ourselves will feel their impact.
Sumner Welles (1892 - ) We are proud still to call ours a young nation. Hence we forget what we should remember: Our nation under the present Constitution has had a longer life unchallenged and unchanged by violent rebellion than any great nation on earth except Great Britain.
