Alfred Russel Wallace Collection
(0.25 linear feet) B W15a American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract A prime exponent of evolutionary theory in the late nineteenth century, the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace arrived independently at the theory of natural selection nearly simultaneously with Charles Darwin. The numerous publications that emerged from his extended field excusions into the Amazon Basin and the Malay Archipelago (Indonesia) Wallace resulted in major contributions to evolutionary theory, biogeography, ecology, and ethnography, and made Wallace, by the end of his life, one of the best known naturalists in Britain. A Socialist, social progressive, and Spiritualist, Wallace's distinctive take on evolutionary change differed from the Darwinian mainstream in significant ways. The Wallace Collection is a miscellaneous assemblage of letters written by and to Alfred Russel Wallace, primarily during the last twenty five years of his life. Varied in content, the letters touch on Wallace's views on evolution, Spiritualism, and to a less degree, his progressive social commitments.

Here's what some famous and not so famous alumni have had to say about Oxford: Not that I had any special reason for hating school. Strange as it may seem to my readers, I was not unpopular there. I was a modest, good-humoured boy. It is Oxford that has made me insufferable. Undergraduates owe their happiness chiefly to the fact that they are no longer at school ... The nonsense which was knocked out of them at school is all put gently back at Oxford ... Sir Max Beerbohm (1872-1956), Merton College Then, then shall Oxford be herself again, Neglect the heart and cultivate the brain- Then this shall be the burden of our song `All change is good - whatever is, is wrong'- Then Intellect's proud flag shall be unfurled, And Brain, and Brain alone shall rule the world. William Ewart Gladstone.
Hulton Getty Picture Archive William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), four times Queen Victoria's prime minister, was born, as Oscar Wilde would have described it, to the purple of commerce. His father owned mines in Wales, factories in Lancashire and sugar plantations in Jamaica. A brilliant student and debater at Oxford, and with powerful family political connections, Gladstone was elected to a seat in the House of Commons from at twenty-three. Except for a few years, he was an ornament of the Commons the rest of his long life. When Wilde wrote of the importance of being earnest, implying that earnestness, or at least the suggestion that one was in earnest, was one of the hallmarks of Victorian life, he might have been thinking of such eminences as Gladstone. From the start it was his political keynote as speaker and writer. As radical politician John Bright once boasted of Gladstone in a speech at Birmingham, "Who equals him in earnestness."
Two years into his parliamentary career as a Conservative he was made a junior lord of the Treasury, and the next year undersecretary for the Colonies. He would hold other sub-cabinet offices while becoming recognized as a master of debate, with one of his leading adversaries Benjamin Disraeli. Their mutual dislike, and rivalry for office, energized English politics for more than forty years, Gladstone leaving their party to join the new Liberals formed from the Whigs and free-trade Tories. As a result when Disraeli, after an election defeat, resigned as chancellor of the Exchequer, he refused to relinquish his Cabinet robes when his place was taken by Gladstone. While their own exchanges of retorts were memorable, they can best be characterized by the appeal of Viscount Palmerston, when prime minister, to his chief point-man on the House of Commons floor: "We need a great Gun to reply to Disraeli. Will you follow him?"

FAMOUS SCOTS Few countries in the world could boast such a vast number of people who have gone down in history. Some are famous, just because of the bloody past which Scotland has endured. Others have invented things that have changed our daily lives, or even have saved our lives. Others are famous due to their efforts in the world of sport. Listed below are just a few of these famous people.
HISTORY St Columba
St Columba, born in 521 in Donegal was an Irish Prince, but is better known for bringing Christianity to Scotland. He founded the monastery at Iona and set about the conversion of the Picts. Iona is still a religious community. MacBeth
MacBeth was King of Scotland from 1040-1057. He was made famous by Shakespeares play of the same name. The real story chronicled has portrayed him in a better light as a fair king in bloodthirsty times. He was the first Scottish king to make a pilgrimage to Rome in 1050. Robert the Bruce
Born in Turnberry Castle, he was a key figure in the Wars of Independence against English occupation. He was crowned in 1306 and reigned till 1329. The Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 was one of the main turning points of the war and there is a National Trust visitor centre at the site near Stirling.

Gladstone, William Ewart (1809-1898)
Gladstone by Roy Jenkins Originally published in 1995, 'Gladstone' is a biography of William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), which charts the political career and personal life of the only person who saw four terms as the British Prime Minister and who left behind a long and successful line of legislation. Roy Jenkins examines the manifold activities of Gladstone's life and uses it to relate the political rhythms, travel patterns and religious assumptions of Victorian England to the modern day. Pan, 2002 - ISBN: 0330411713 Gladstone, Disraeli and Later Victorian Politics by Paul Adelman A major new edition of this introductory survey of the two main political parties, from the rise of the Liberal Party under Gladstone until the period of Conservative domination under Salisbury in the late nineteenth century. As well as assessing the impact of major political landmarks such as the Great Reform Acts, it also describes the nineteenth century political scene. Paul Adelman’s Gladstone, Disraeli and Later Victorian Politics must be considered one of the ‘classics’ in the series. The book was first published in 1970 and then revised and reissued as Second Edition in 1983. Since its initial publication the book has been used by countless students in conjunction with their nineteenth-century history (and politics) courses. The publication of this, the Third Edition, will thus be greatly welcomed. For the new edition the book has been largely rewritten (and, as a consequence, expanded) to take account of the major publications which have appeared since 1983, and recent historical controversies on the period. The bibliography has also been radically revised and updated to incorporate the new works.

Brighton, Sussex: Harvester Press Microform Publications, 1978. 6 reels. COVERAGE The reports from 1837-1867 are comprised of British prime ministers' handwritten reports to the monarch on proceedings of cabinet meetings. These manuscript letters represent the sole official record of the deliberations of Cabinet. Prime Ministers such as Melbourne, Peel, Russell and Palmerston wrote confidential memoranda for Queen Victoria on all major questions of the day. Their reports cover the three decades when the Great Reform Acts of 1832, civil disturbances and the Chartist Riots contributed to unprecedented economic and social change. The reports from 1867-1916 include 1,700 confidential manuscript letters preserved in the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle. These letters are the only official record of cabinet meetings, decisions and discussions for this time, as no other historical record was allowed to be kept. The Prime Minister, as the Crown's first confidential adviser, was required to send a report to the sovereign after every cabinet meeting. Only he was permitted to take notes of Cabinet proceeedings, and his personal letters were written the same day and prepared in his own hand. They range from short statements to detailed accounts of arguments put forth and decisions taken. A wide range of subjects is covered, with the greatest emphasis on political activity in Great Britain.
