He was the leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister in four governments from 1868 to 1894. He was responsible for major reforms in every sphere of national life and for the development of imperial and foreign policy. He also stamped his moral authority on the politics of his time but finally divided the Liberal Party on the issue of Irish Home Rule. The Peel Web William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) William Ewart Gladstone was born on 29 December 1809 at Rodney Street, Liverpool. He was the fourth son and fifth child of a family of six born to Sir John Gladstone and his wife Anne Mackenzie Robertson. Sir John Gladstone made his fortune in trade especially with America and the West Indies: it was there that he owned sugar plantations. William Gladstone was educated at a preparatory school at Seaforth Vicarage near Liverpool before attending Eton between 1821 and 1827. From there he went to Christ Church Oxford between 1828 and 1831. In 1831 he spoke at the Oxford Union against the Reform Act, saying that any electoral reform would lead to revolution. His Degree was in Classics but he also studied Mathematics and in 1831 was awarded a Double First in the subjects. In the 1832 election following the passing of the Reform Act he was elected as the Tory MP for Newark-on-Trent, on the influence of the Duke of Newcastle; he took the seat of Michael Sadler , the factory reformer . He then went on a Grand Tour of Europe, visiting Belgium, France and various centres in Italy. On his return in 1833 he entered Lincoln's Inn but by 1839 he had requested that his name should be removed from the list because he no longer intended to be called to the Bar.

The Peel Web William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898): a proposal of marriage On 17 January 1839 William Gladstone sent a proposal of marriage to Catherine Glynne. The style of writing is typically Gladstonian: convoluted and often unclear. This text is taken from Philip Magnus' Gladstone: a biography (London, John Murray, 1954), pp. 38-9. [Gladstone] was with the Glynnes by moonlight in the Colosseum on 3 January 1839; and he had then an opportunity to speak to Catherine, for a moment, alone. He began to speak of his love, but Catherine would not respond. She moved away, and Gladstone blamed himself bitterly; he feared that his hopes had all been ruined. He was inhibited by his repressions from folding the girl in his arms, and taking her by surprise, and by storm. He resolved, therefore, to trust to a letter, but he postponed writing it until 17 January, two days before he was due to return home. Its breathless and tortuous style bears witness to the tumult of his emotions. The fact that he emerged more or less successfully from its second paragraph, consisting of one enormous sentence of 141 words and 18 clauses and sub-clauses, is perhaps worthy of remark: 62 Piazza di Spagna 17 January, 1839: night

Again, in view of the current estimates of prospective population for this earth, some people have begun to entertain alarm for the probable condition of England (if not Great Britain) when she gets (say) seventy millions that are allotted to her against six or eight hundred millions for the United States. We have heard in some systems of the pressure of population upon food; but the idea of any pressure from any quarter upon space is hardly yet familiar. Still, I suppose that many a reader must have been struck with the naive simplicity of the hyperbole of St. John, perhaps a solitary unit of its kind in the New Testament: "the which if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written."

Advanced Search New visitors: Returning BBCi members: W E Gladstone (1809-1898) Prime Minister of Great Britain and Ireland The political life of William Gladstone closely reflects the impact of most of the Parliamentary Reforms which occurred in the nineteenth century, the later ones which Gladstone himself had a hand in bringing about. He was first election to the House of Commons for a rotten borough , lost one of the two seats at Oxford University on the first appearance of the postal ballot and tried to solve the Irish Home Rule situation through legislation. All the time Gladstone never gave up on what he saw as his God given task to serve through being a Christian member of the House of Commons. He even crossed the House from the Tory benches to the Liberals, for whom he served four terms, 1868-74, 1880-85, January-July 1886 and 1892-94, as Prime Minister. He also served many years as Chancellor of the Exchequer however, despite his opposition to Income Tax. This had been revived by the Peel administration in 1842, in which Gladstone was a minister, he was, however, never able to abolish it. Early Life John Gladstone's forth son and fifth child William was born on the 29th December 1809 in Liverpool, he was named after a close friend of his father William Ewart. John Gladstone had risen from humble beginnings from the docks of Leith, which serve Edinburgh to be a highly respected and wealthy businessman through his interests in the West Indies, America and India. John Gladstone was a friend of Sir Robert Peel the Prime Minister from 1834-5 and 1841-1846, who in later life conferred a baronetcy upon John Gladstone, sat in Parliament from 1818 to 1827 and was master of many slaves upon his various oversees properties and plantations. His wealth enabled him to give his sons the start in live that he never had and thus William was dispatched to Eton in 1821 for his schooling.
