The Nineteenth Century Novel The Nineteenth century was the great age of the novel. It saw the growth of a large new middle class reading public who had the leisure to read long works of fiction. Books were expensive, but circulating libraries had established themselves, enabling readers to borrow newly published works for a small subscription. Novels usually appeared in three-volume form ("Do not speak slightingly of the three-volume novel, Cecily," says Miss Prism in The Importance of Being Earnest. "I wrote one myself in earlier days."), but the commonest form of first publication would be in monthly parts or serialisation in one of the many magazines, such as Blackwood’s or The Cornhill.
