    Library Charlotte Perkins Gilman Dictionary
    Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Charlotte Perkins Gilman was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the daughter of Frederick Beecher Perkins, a librarian and writer, and Mary (Westcott) Perkins. Among her father's forebears was the novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe, who was his aunt. Perkins abandoned his wife after their infant died in 1866 - Mary Perkins lived with her children on the brink of poverty and was often forced to move from relative to relative or to other temporary lodgings. Charlotte was a voracious reader and largely self-educated. She studied two years at Rhode Island School of Design (1878-80) and then earned her living by designing greetings cards. In 1884 she married Charles Walter Stetson, an aspiring artist. After the birth of their daughter Katharine, she was beset by depression and began treatment with Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell in 1886. His recommendations, 'live as domestic a life as possible' and 'never touch a pen, brush or pencil as long as you live' were later satirized by Gilman in her autobiography. She also used the recommendations as discussions in her most renowned short story, 'The Yellow Wallpaper ,’ which first appeared in New England Magazine (1892). The narrator is a young mother suffering from a temporary nervous depression. John, her husband, is a physician, who doesn't believe in supernatural things. He has ordered her to 'rest' in the bedroom of their rented house. The patterns of the room's hideous yellow wallpaper start to haunt her. She sees a woman creeping around it, as if she wanted to get out.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman founded THE FORERUNNER magazine in 1909 and published and edited it over the next seven years until its demise in 1916. Within this forum Gilman continued to explore, explain, and denounce women's and men's roles as prescribed by society. While her novel HERLAND received scant attention when published in 1915, it has been recognized since its first book publication in 1979 as a benchmark of utopian and feminist fiction.

In her soft-carpeted, thick-curtained, richly furnished chamber, Mrs Marroner lay sobbing on the wide, soft bed. She sobbed bitterly, chokingly, despairingly; her shoulders heaved and shook convulsively; her hands were tight-clenched. She had forgotten her elaborate dress, the more elaborate bedcover; forgotten her dignity, her self-control, her pride. In her mind was an overwhelming, unbelievable horror, an immeasurable loss, a turbulent, struggling mass of emotion. In her reserved, superior, Boston-bred life, she had never dreamed that it would be possible for her to feel so many things at once, and with such trampling intensity. In her uncarpeted, thin-curtained, poorly furnished chamber on the top floor, Gerta Petersen lay sobbing on the narrow, hard bed. She was of larger frame than her mistress, grandly built and strong; but all her proud young womanhood was prostrate now, convulsed with agony, dissolved in tears. She did not try to control herself. She wept for two. This was seven months ago. Business had delayed him from week to week, from month to month. He wrote to his wife, long, loving, frequent letters, deeply regretting the delay, explaining how necessary, how profitable it was, congratulating her on the wide resources she had, her well-filled, well-balanced mind, her many interests.

    Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Gilman's life was shaped by two principle circumstances of her family; one was their status as intellectuals and reformers (Harriet Beecher Stowe was Gilman's great-aunt, and her great-grandfather was the fmous minister Lyman Beecher, among other lesser luminaries) and the other was the instability of her nuclear family, with her mother's consequent unhappiness. The first encouraged Gilman to participate in the family tradition of progressive public works, while the second left her estranged from her father, and with an emotionall y distant mother. Gilman described her mother's system of child-rearing as deliberately "deny[ing] the child all expression of affection as far as possible, so that she should not be used to it or long for it." This had a naturally unhappy effect on Gilman, who was frequently visited by self-doubt and depression throughout her adult life. Gilman's first vocation was painting, by which she was able to maintain herself prior to her first marriage. Through art, in fact, she met her husband, the artist Walter Stetson. From early in the marriage, Gilman suffered from debilitating depression, and her symptoms only lessened when she was separated from her husband. She tried S. Weir Mitchell's rest cure, which, with its requirements that she never touch a pen or brush again, had an effect the reverse of heathful. Stetson's belief that Gilman should become less "selfish" - that is, wholly devoted to his service, rather than involved in the public welfare - exacerbated her mental troubles, particularly as she seems to have internalized his (and society's) prescription that wives should abnegate their individuality on the shrine of spousal devotion. Gilman later traced the baleful effects of this philosophy in "
