Sullivan, and The Bab Ballads . The following limits itself to the collaborations of Gilbert and Sullivan during their heyday, with the exception of the Bab Ballads , which show Gilbert's metrical skill and sense of humor and which first brought him to public notice. The Complete Annotated Gilbert and Sullivan , edited and introduced by Ian Bradley, was published by Oxford, 1996.

The partnership between playwright William Schwenck Gilbert (1836-1911) and composer Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900) produced, between 1871 and 1896, fourteen comic operas. Some of them remain amongst the most popular of all stage musical productions: The Mikado The Pirates of Penzance H.M.S. Pinafore The Gondoliers and The Yeomen of the Guard Gilbert was a barrister by profession, and many of his stories focus on themes of a legal nature. Even where the theme is not legal, Gilbert often introduced songs dealing with legal subjects. The object of this collection is to bring together those songs which are of most direct interest from a legal perspective.

    Sullivan
Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900), celebrated conductor and composer, achieved his greatest success when he collaborated with W.S. Gilbert on several comic operas. Returning home late one night after a more than usually robust party, Sullivan found that he could not tell his own house from a terraced row of identical residences on the same street. His devotion to music did not desert him, however. Walking along the row he paused to kick the metal shoe scrapers that stood by the sides of the front entrances. One sounded familiar. "That's it ... E-flat," Sullivan muttered, whereupon he walked confidently to his own door. A Final Thought ... "I am, in point of fact, a particularly haughty and exclusive person, of pre-Adamite ancestral descent. You will understand this when I tell you that I can trace my ancestry back to a protoplasmal primordial atomic globule." W.S. Gilbert (1836-1911), English librettist. Pooh-Bah, in The Mikado, act 1 (1885). It's of interest to note that in his librettos Gilbert went out of his way to poke fun at popular theories of Darwinian evolution whenever he could.

Description Sir William Schwenck Gilbert (1836-1911) was the most brilliant dramatist of Victorian England. His plays were considered daring and cynical, and he was the forerunner of Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw. He was also a prolific journalist and humorous poet (his Bab Ballads are still widely read), and he achieved worldwide fame through his long collaboration with the composer Arthur Sullivan. The libretti of

COMIC opera in two acts; text by W. S. Gilbert; music by Sir Arthur Sullivan. First produced at the Savoy Theatre, London, March 14, 1885. First performance in the United States, July 6, 1885, at the Museum, Chicago. Sir William Schwenk Gilbert (1836-1911) Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) Not without reason is this one of the most popular of the long line of "Savoy Operas," for Gilbert's text is a masterpiece of comic writing to which Sullivan's ever tuneful music is perfectly adapted, serving in a remarkable manner to set off the amusing character of the words. The Japanese setting supplies a refreshingly colorful background, although, of course the characters are by no means Japanese, but the Victorian British in a very thin disguise. Mike Leigh's 1999 film Topsy-Turvy is an excellent dramatization of Gilbert and Sullivan's often troubled working relationship, and of how
