    "Lose no sleep over Gilbert"
with those few words a Trial and Error TV programme, broadcast on 5 January 1999, dismissed the possibility that Raymond Gilbert, convicted of murder in 1981, might not have been properly convicted. The programme was aimed at obtaining justice for John Kamara, Gilbert's co- defendant, who was also convicted for the same murder. In that respect the programme was successful. The Court of Appeal later in 2000 quashed the verdict on Kamara, who had already spent 19 years in prison. But we were told to 'lose no sleep' over Gilbert. Sleep or not, I nevertheless have grave and uncomfortable doubts. It does not seem to me that Gilbert was convicted beyond reasonable doubt. Born of a white mother and a black father, certainly an unloved child, Gilbert, afflicted with a speech impediment, had a patchy education and drifted into the underworld of Liverpool crime. He already had a record for robbery and for one assault before the accusation of murder. He was therefore an obvious suspect when a local betting shop manager was murdered in the course of a robbery which went dreadfully wrong. But suspicion is not enough. What of evidence? Against neither Gilbert nor Kamara was there any positive evidence to connect them directly with the crime. The only evidence was actually against Kamara, now declared innocent. He, and not Gilbert, was picked out on an identification parade as the man one witness saw struggling with a white man outside the betting shop at about the time of the murder. The parade itself was not run according to proper rules. The witness had failed to pick out Gilbert on the first parade. The second parade was made up of a number of the same people with Kamara introduced as one of the new people. So the chances therefore of picking out Kamara were rather higher than they would otherwise have been if all those on the parade had been new to the witness.

    56. Article - Gilberts
The main islands of the Gilbert and Ellice groups are moreor-less directly Northof has three good shades, the 1939 stamp’s frame being in Olive-green, 1943
    http://www.murraypayne.com/art14.htm
From our point of view, we are looking only at the stamps, but do not forget that there is a huge range of postal history to be found, commercial covers being very difficult and desirable. The stamps are more straightforward, despite the printing being split between Bradbury Wilkinson, Waterlow and De La Rue. The printings are easier to reconstruct than most, with just three printings of the ½d, up to a maximum of eight printings for the 1d value. Over 14 years, this means that the picture is not too complicated. Ocean Island on May 12 th th st The 1/- shows a good range of reactions under ultra-violet and I recommend you take a look at any you possess! It is also a simple stamp to split into its six printings. The two final printings, both perf 12, are unusually obvious in their differences for stamps printed only 10 months apart, although the final printing is elusive. The 2/- had just three printings, all listed by Commonwealth. Various features differentiate them, including vignettes in dark blue (1939), dark violet-blue (1943) and violet-blue (1944). The 2/6d shades are more subtle. The 1939 printing is on thicker paper than the later stamps; 1944 has a lighter vignette than 1943. Again, the three printings of the 5/- all rate catalogue status, duly delivered by Commonwealth. Paper and frame colour separate them easily, the frames being blue (1939), ultramarine (1943) and deep blue (1944). Acknowledgements:

Soon tempeh (pronounced tem-PAY) will be one of the first soy products to come to mind. It is fast becoming the most popular soy food on the market because it is highly nutritious, easy to digest, and deliciously simple to prepare. In the past five years tempeh has grown so much in popularity that it is now available in the refrigerated section of many supermarkets. Ten years ago it could only be found at health food stores and Asian food markets. While tempeh may be considered new for many, it actually has a long and extensive history dating back more than 2,000 years. Originally developed in Indonesia, it is a traditional fermented soybean product made from cracked, cooked soybeans inoculated with beneficial bacteria to give it a chewy and meaty consistency. It comes in several varieties, either 100 percent soybeans or soybeans combined with one or more grains like rice, millet, or barley. 2. Tempeh is a great choice for people who have difficulty digesting plant-based high-protein foods like beans and legumes or soy foods such as tofu. Because tempeh is a fermented soy product, its enzymes are partially broken down, making it easier to metabolize. It does not produce the unpleasant gastrointestinal discomfort and gas that some other plant-based proteins do. This fermentation process actually allows your body to more easily assimilate and absorb tempeh's nutrients. Besides being a terrific cholesterol-free easy-to-digest meat alternative, it is also ideal for people on low sodium diets. Unlike other fermented soy products, like miso which is very salty, tempeh is extremely low in sodium.
