language="en"; español français Medieval Renaissance ... Z JOHN GAY (1685-1732). English poet and dramatist. Best known for The Beggar's Opera You've probably heard 'Weird Al' Yankovic on the radio or recordings, or turned on PBS and seen Mark Russell. Each of them sings other people's songs, but with their own, often satirical words added to make the lyrics relevant and funny. This is called parody and it is exactly what John Gay did with his Beggar's Opera. To create what came to be known as a ballad opera, he concocted a plot that lampooned not only the morals of eighteenth century London, but also the style of Italian opera seria. In doing so, he played to the interests of a broad segment of society and helped to bring about changes on the opera stage. This wide appeal made The Beggar's Opera the most successful theater event of the century. The sources for his songs were equally broad, from parodies of operatic works by George Frideric Handel (the leading composer of Italian opera in England) to folk and popular songs that dated back over a hundred years. The work's influence continued into the twentieth century, when Kurt Weill and Bertold Brecht created a modern version, the Threepenny Opera (1928).

    John Gay
English poet, was baptized on the 16th of September 1685 at Barnstaple, where his family had long been settled. He was educated at the grammar school of the town under Robert Luck, who had published some Latin and English poems. On leaving school he was apprenticed to a silk mercer in London, but being weary, according to Dr Johnson, "of either the restraint or the servility of his occupation," he soon returned to Barnstaple, where he spent some time with his uncle, the Rev. John Hanmer, the Nonconformist minister of the town. He then returned to London, and though no details are available for his biography until the publication of Wine in 1708, the account he gives in Rurat Sports (1713), of years wasted in attending on courtiers who were profuse in promises never kept, may account for his occupations. Among his early literary friends were Aaron Hill and Eustace Budgell. In The Present Slate of Wit (1711) Gay attempted to give an account of "all our periodical papers, whether monthly, weekly or diurnal." He especially praised the Taller and the Spectator , and Swift, who knew nothing of the authorship of the pamphlet, suspected it to be inspired by Steele and Addison. To

    - John Gay's epitaph
As we sit here, nearly 300 years removed from the debut of The Beggar's Opera,

it's hard to recapture the effect that it had on the England of 1728. So look
at it this way, John Gay was the Sex Pistols of his day and The Beggar's Opera
hit London like Never Mind the Bollocks.... Since Italian opera had first come to London in 1705, it had dominated the
British stage. Replete with ornate sets, elaborate costumes, unintelligible
plots and imported sopranos and castrati, it was less art than event. Audiences romantic tales unfolded on stage.
Into this artificial world, Gay unleashed an opera about the scum of London
society, set in taverns and thieves' dens. He tells the story of Peachum, a fence with a lucrative sideline in informing on fellow criminals. His daughter Polly has secretly married MacHeath, a highwayman. Now Peachum and his "wife"
