    Poet, novelist, and critic (1811-72). Theophile Gautier spent his whole life in Paris and was a central figure in the world of literature and art for nearly half a century, moving from the brash young Turk of the Petit Cenacle to the established member of Second Empire high society. The shadows of Bohemia are dark with such unhappy creatures; but in the Romantic age, at least, Bohemia had its brilliant inhabitants. They had a colour and panache, a gaiety and often a distinction which no later Bohemians captured. The most notable of the Romantic Bohemians was Gautier.
    The Romantic Bohemians burst into the public consciousness on 25 February 1830, at what became known as the bataille d'Hernani . Considering the national uncertainties of the time, the political causes which they might have adopted, the Romantic Bohemians remained strangely free and uncommitted. Their cause was smaller and it was greater. Hugo's poetic drama, Hernani , broke in every way with dramatic conventions; even before it was staged, it had become the symbol of the new Romantic literature. But the bataille d'Hernani was not merely fought on literary grounds: it was, as the contestants knew, the war between old and young, between past and future, between restriction and absolute freedom. It was a supreme and public occasion for youth to assert itself.

Ilisloire du Romantisme , he formed a minor romantic clique who were distinguished for a time by the most extravagant eccentricity. A flaming crimson waistcoat and a great mass of waving hair were the outward signs which qualified Gautier for a chief rank among the enthusiastic devotees who attended the rehearsals of Hernani with red tickets marked “ Hierro,” performed mocking dances round the bust of Racine, and were at all times ready to exchange word or blow with the perruques and grisdlres of the classical party.
      In Gautier’s case these freaks were not inconsistent with real genius and real devotion to sound ideals of literature. He began (like Thackeray, to whom he presents in other ways some striking points of resemblance) as an artist, but soon found that his true powers lay in another direction.

    Théophile Gautier The French poet Théophile Gautier, born in 1811, first studied painting because of his love for the visual, which later became apparent in his poetry. In 1830 he was the foremost supporter of Victor Hugo's play Hernani.
    He founded the doctrine of Art for Art's sake and proclaimed it in the preface to his novel Mademoiselle de Maupin in 1835. One sees this doctrine best presented in his most famous poetic work Émaux et camées , published in 1852, which establishes him as one of France's leading poets. THE POT OF FLOWERS Sometimes a small boy finds a tiny seed
    And takes a porcelain pot whose colours charm
    His eye to serve as a garden-bed,
    Where monstrous blossoms and blue dragons swarm.
    He goes away. Down snakes the coiling root;
    The stem lifts from the soul, grows, branches out;
    While deeper daily dives its hairy foot,
    Until it bursts the belly of the pot.
    The child comes back. He wonders much to see
    Above the shards the stout green daggers dart; The stalk is tough; he cannot tug it free;
