21. THE AUTHORS
Howard Roger Garis (18731962) was the most prolific ghostwriter for the Syndicate, with more than 285 book-length manuscripts, and was a close friend of

THE AUTHORS Although my guesses were right in a few cases, I have had to make many revisions—sometimes reluctantly, I must admit. Internal evidence had to be squared with the information in the Stratemeyer files, and in a couple of places I had to be convinced. Although there are two "unknowns" in the list of outliners, James has patiently convinced me of the accuracy of the names which his and Geoff’s research has discovered. It is remotely possible that new evidence may surface as research continues. For example, if we learn that one ghostwriter was initially given the outline (as indicated in Stratemeyer files) but couldn't or wouldn't write the story, and someone else did, then this would change who really wrote a particular book. This kind of information will emerge from studying the correspondence from a particular time period—a very time-consuming procedure. Another factor which can introduce variations in the writing is the length and detail of the manuscript. As Edward Stratemeyer’s daughters, Harriet and Edna, became more experienced in the business, they supplied more complete outlines to the ghostwriters, and applied a heavier hand in editing the result. Ghostwriters, depending on how busy they were at the time of writing, could supply a manuscript of varying length or quality, which might need rewriting. According to the information in the Stratemeyer files, the outliners and ghostwriters of the books of the X Bar X Boys series are as follows. The biographical information was provided by James Keeline.

Tom Swifties
by Mark_Israel, Mark_Israel@uqv-mts.alberta Not many dictionaries define "Tom Swiftie". One that does is The Random House Dictionary of the English Language , 1st edition (1966): Tom Swiftie, a play on words that follows an unvarying pattern and relies for its humor on a punning relationship between the way an adverb describes a speaker and at the same time refers significantly to the import of the speaker's statement, as in "I know who turned off the lights," Tom hinted darkly. [named after a narrative mannerism characteristic of the Tom Swift American series of adventure novels for boys] In actual use, "Tom Swiftie" seems to have a somewhat broader meaning, and includes the form christened "croakers" by Roy Bongartz, wherein a verb rather than an adverb supplies the pun (e.g. "I'm dying", he croaked). "Who is this Tom Swiftie character anyway?" asked Tom unselfconsciously. Tom Swift was the brainchild of Edward L. Stratemeyer (1862-1930). Stratemeyer first used the name "Tom Swift" for the title character in "Shorthand Tom; or, the exploits of a young reporter", serialized in 1894. Sixteen years later he re-used the name for a new character, an ingenious youth whose amazing scientific inventions and discoveries would carry him to weird and wonderful places. The Tom Swift adventure series, which was published under the pseudonym Victor Appleton, began with Tom Swift and his motorcycle; or Fun and Adventure on the road

Because I write primarily about children's literature, I would like to speak briefly on behalf of public library service to children.
A century ago, public libraries in this country posted signs reading, "No dogs or children allowed." In the years that followed, American librarians, including some trained at Brooklyn's Pratt Institute, pioneered the philosophy and techniques of bringing books and children together in the friendly atmosphere of a library reading room created specially for them. The work begun in this way in the 1910s and 20s became a model for public libraries throughout the world, from London to Tokyo. That is a heritage we should be proud of.
But why is library service to children worth supporting now and in the future?
We hear a lot in the news about children's reading scores. People who care about these test scores should care about public library service to children.
Children become strong and effective readers by reading books they truly enjoy. The books they are likeliest to enjoy are the ones that best match their individual interests and needs.
