Page Content Introduction By the middle of the nineteenth century, post-operative sepsis infection accounted for the death of almost half of the patients undergoing major surgery. A common report by surgeons was: operation successfully but the patient died. In 1839 the chemist Justin von Liebig had asserted that sepsis was a kind of combustion caused by exposing moist body tissue to oxygen. It was therefore considered that the best prevention was to keep air away from wounds by means of plasters, collodion or resins. Joseph Lister (1827-1912) Joseph Lister, a British surgeon, doubted this explanation. For many years he had explored the inflammation of wounds, at the Glasgow infirmary. These observations had led him to considered that infection was not due to bad air alone, and that 'wound sepsis' was a form of decomposition. Born on the 5 April 1827 in Upton, Essex, Joseph Lister was the son of the British physicist Joseph Jackson Lister. Top of Page Early Life After an early education at various Quaker schools he entered University College, London. After studying the arts he graduated and decided to take up medicine at the same College. He enrolled in the faculty of medical science in October 1848. During this time he was taught by the eminent physiologist William Sharpey, recognised as one of the greatest surgical teacher of his day. Lister was a brilliant student and graduated a bachelor of medicine with honours in 1852.

http://www.28thmass.org/RegiBand/RegBand.htm
Regimental Band Like many early war regiments, the 28th Massachusetts was authorized to recruit a regimental band during the fall of 1861 to serve alongside the rest of the regiment. Judging by the names represented below, there seems to have been little effort to recruit Irish musicians. Most of the regimental band hailed were from the Boston area, although five were from East Douglas and four from Gardner, Massachusetts. Virtually all stated that they were professional musicians prior to their enlistment. Samuel Curry, a 27- year old professor of music from Boston was the leader of the band throughout its attachment to the regiment. In July 1862, the Adjutant General of the U.S. army issued an order calling for a reduction in the number of military bands attached to the volunteer regiments. Henceforth, each brigade was entitled to only a single band funded and supported by the government. Any regiment that wished to retain its band would have to support it through its own finances. In response to this order, the entire band of the 28th Massachusetts Infantry was mustered out of the service of the United States on August 17, 1862, just a week after they had arrived in Virginia after five months' service in South Carolina. The only member of the band who would remain with the regiment was George L. Mitchell, a 22-year old trader from Boston who served as Drum Major. It may be that he had no choice, since drum majors often were selected from the ranks of enlisted soldiers. He eventually was promoted to 1st Sergeant of Company A, and then commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in September, 1862. Just days after Fredericksburg, he was commissioned 1st Lieutenant. Less than a year later, he resigned in May, 1863 to accept a commissioned rank in the U.S. Colored Troops.

STOUT Family Chickamaugan Tsalagis/Cherokees (offsite) see also or see .html version Family of Thomas and Rebecca Adeline "Addie" (Templum) Franklin "Chief" Gardner Green , like his father Runningfox, was "Ugu"of the Cherokee Town at Shooting Creek, near Chunkygal Mountain, in what is now North Carolina. Before , there was no Cherokee Nation, and the most powerful Cherokee " moitie " was a "town." Like some Indians of his period, he "seems" to be a real mystery man *if* one does not understand Cherokee history in its truest context possible. True, recoerds are scanthy betyween 1700 and 1800, but familis do transm,it cultufral information. So it is with the Green Family of Cherokee. There is a swirl of controversy around Gardner Green nowadays. We do have our detractors (like Darran McCathern) who are "Johnny-come-latelys" and who are trying to draw attention (and no doubt monies) to themselves. But, now that Darran McCathern has shown what little he thinks he knows, we will tell you what actually happened.
