track athlete, was born on this day in Haldimand County Ontario in 1908; raised in Saskatoon; dies Sept. 26 1987. In August 1926 Catherwood, then in high school, entered the Saskatoon city track and field championships and equalled the Canadian record for the high jump. On Labour Day that year she broke the world record, held by a Briton. Called The Saskatoon Lily by reporters, on account of her film star looks, she found backing from Toronto philanthropist Teddy Oke, which allowed her to train hard. At the Canadian championships in Halifax in 1928, she again broke the World record, jumping 1.6 m. At the Amsterdam Olympics that year, jumping in cold windy weather, Catherwood cleared 5' 2 1/2" (1.588m) to take the Gold Medal, making her the only Canadian woman to win an individual track gold. Shunning the offer of a movie contract, Catherwood took a business course, got married and moved to California.

In order to better understand the family relations ,which at times appear to be very confusing, certain extracts of the books written on or about the families have been incorporated into this web page. It is suggested that if you are interested in the history of that period of time, whether it be Scottish, English, Swedish, European, Canadian or for that matter American you should take the time to obtain the books in question and read them in their entirety.
One must realize also at this time in Scotland, the industrial revolution was beginning to run at full speed, many new inventions were coming into play that allowed adventuristic gentlemen, and others, some very unscrupulous, to embark on schemes that for some of them, made them very very rich . The majority of these families, while not belonging to the upper crust of Society, or to the Aristocracy, managed to find their own level of social interaction. Mingling, associating, and marrying amongst themselves, provided them with the ways and means of enforcing their status and increasing in most cases, their financial portfolios. What Royalty had accomplished in the past to ensure their own strong succession, was now being practiced several social levels below, by the rising industrial entrepreneurial class.

Cosmonaut. GAIA
The Earth seen as a living entity. Promoted by British biologist James Lovelock in 1969. His thoughts was published in his book 'Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth' (1979). To the ancient Greeks, Gaea was the Earth goddess. Broad-based scientist Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) seems to have held a similar view as described in his mammoth work 'Cosmos' (1845-1858) which gave "due prominence to the consideration of the existence of one common bond encircling the whole of the organic world, of the control of eternal laws and of the causal connection."
