OAS_AD('Top'); COLLINS FAMILY HISTORY HOME MY FAMILY GENERAL INFORMATION SHIPPING ... (IN)FAMOUS PEOPLE TOM COLLINS (1843 - 1912) - aka: JOSEPH FURPHY A very well known name in Australia is Tom Collins, which in fact was the nom-de-plume of Joseph Furphy. Born September 26, 1843 at Yering, near Yarra Glen, Victoria, Australia and died September 13, 1912 at Claremont, West Australia
Under the name of Tom Collins, Joseph was a well published Australian author, he was well known under his own name also, so much so that "furphy" became a word in everyday Australian speech, signifying a rumour without foundation. (Joe Furphy was not himself a disseminator of rumours, but the water-carts his firm manufactured, which were in use all over the country and were called furphies, were frequently the meeting-place of gossips.) His father was a tenant farmer at Tanderagee, Co. Armagh, who emigrated in 1840. The surname Furphy is very rare. It occurs occasionally in the modern birth registers for Co. Armagh and also in the Co. Armagh Hearth Money-Rolls of 1664-5. Professor M. A. O'Brien has suggested me that the name is probably O Foirbhte, derived from the adjective foirbhthe, meaning complete or perfect.

CHAPTER 15
THE IRISH EXILES
It is said of the Irish that ‘they won every Nation’s battle but their own’. The green flags of the Irish Brigades on the Continent carried the battle honours of Cremona, Spire, Luzzara, Blenheim, Cassano, Rammillies, Almanza, Alcira, Malplaquet and Denain — to name only some of their great victories. The Irish Brigade formed in France assisted Vauban to victory at the siege of Nabur, a battle that was fought with over 100,000 men on either side. The regiments of Dillon and Burke rescued the city of Cremona in Italy, the troops turning out in their shirts at night, wakened by the sound of invading cavalry. The Imperial Cuirassiers of Baron Freiberg were repulsed in a bloody triumph that all Europe applauded. A year later Nugent’s Regiment of horsemen was to cut up the German cavalry of the Prince of Hesse. It was after the defeat of the English Duke of Cumberland at Fontenoy in France, by the famous bayonet charge of the Irish regiments that George II said of the Penal Code: ‘Cursed be the Laws that deprive me of such subjects’. The British historian Lecky affirms that it is in the Continental Catholic countries, where the Irish exiles and their children had risen to posts of the highest dignity and power, and not amid the ‘outcasts and pariahs’ in the motherland, ‘the real history of Irish Catholics during the first half of the eighteenth century is to be found’.
