As the rebellion in Ireland spread, the major towns in Ulster such as Enniskillen, Londonderry, Coleraine, Carrickfergus, and Belfast received crucial warnings and were able to prepare for the attack . But the small towns and the villages in the more rural areas, such as Gilford, were ravaged. The total number of people killed, and the manner of their death can never be accurately documented. Although accounts of the massacres have been exaggerated: ranging from two or three thousand victims up to hundreds of thousand of deaths, there is no doubt that very many innocent people were murdered. A figure of 12,000 killed out of a protestant population of 40,000 is as close as it is possible to come; the figure includes death attributed to military activities.

Rex Nan Kivell Collection NK829; Pictorial Collection T390 Roslyn Russell finds in the National Library many accounts of the home of Sir George Grey, nineteenth-century Governor and Premier of New Zealand Kawau (Maori for ‘cormorant’ or ‘shag’) Island in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand’s North Island lies eight kilometres off the Rodney Coast north of Auckland. Occupied by Maori people before the European occupation of New Zealand, it was a well-known fishing ground for the muru (spotted shark). The Maori people left Kawau Island in 1826, after a peace agreement with Hongi Hika, a celebrated chief. European settlement began a few years later, and manganese and copper were mined for over a decade before the island was sold in 1855 after the mine had flooded several years earlier.

Accio, Lucius Accius (170-86 a.
