James Anthony Froude
British historian, 1818-1894
Instruction does not prevent wasted time or mistakes; and mistakes themselves are often the best teachers of all. As we advance in life, we learn the limits of our abilities. Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow creatures is amusing in itself. Experience teaches slowly, and at the cost of mistakes. Fear is the parent of cruelty. The endurance of the inequalities of life by the poor is the marvel of human society. Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow creatures is amusing in itself. Protoplasm and House-Cleaning
    SARAH O. JEWETT.
I AM roused to make solemn reflections this morning on life and progress, to ask whether the advances we make, and the heights we attain, add sufficiently to our happiness and contentment. Do not discourage me in the outset by saying that mere satisfaction and pleasure are low aims, though Mr. Froude has an eloquent and convincing passage on this subject, in his Essay on the Book of Job. But, after all, we do look somewhat for happiness, we do measure the success or failure of men's lives, more or less by this standard. We will not yield wholly to the idea that a man, however great his spiritual and metaphysical achievements and capabilities, is to be envied, if he gives us no outward evidence of being victorious. For we anticipate a material success and a visible happiness. I make no effort to be scientific. I shall not try to give an accurate definition of Protoplasm. Never mind whether it is a substance with definite physical and chemical properties of the highest importance, as regards our vital organization, or only a word representing a set of ideas, or a group of radically different substances, or one of the 'words, words, words!' as H

    Freethought writer
Atheists are often charged with blasphemy, but it is a crime they cannot commit...
When the Atheist examines, denounces, or satirises the gods, he is not dealing with persons but with ideas. He is incapable of insulting God, for he does not admit the existence of any such being.... We attack not a person but a belief, not a binge but an idea, not a fact but a fancy.
    G. W. Foote , "Who are the Blasphemers?" in Flowers of Freethought Refer me to one Atheist who denies the existence of God.... Etymologically, as well as philosophically, an ATheist is one without God. That is all the "A" before "Theist" really means.
    G. W. Foote , What Is Agnosticism (London, 1902), quoted from George H. Smith, " Defining Atheism ," in Atheism, Ayn Rand, and other Heresies The Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr.
The Riverside Church in New York City
Proclaim a theology of divine righteousness which demands justice, respect, tolerance, compassion, inclusiveness, trust in the ultimate efficacy of divine zeal, and the rigorous pursuit of peace in the midst of competing interests and faith claims.
