ROBERT LEE FROST Robert Lee Frost was born on March 26, 1874 in San Francisco, California. When he was 11, his father's died, and his family moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts. Frost only sporadically attended college and made a living by working various odd jobs. Although he wrote poety, he had limited success in having them published. However, in 1894 he sold "My Butterfly: An Elegy" to a New York literary journal, The Independent. The following year, Frost married Elinor White, whom he had known in high school. In 1912 Frost moved to England. There he befriended poets Edward Thomas, Rupert Brooke, and Lascelles Abercrombie, who did much to aid his literary career. With their help, Frost published his first two volumes of poetry, A Boy's Will (1913) and North of Boston (1914). These works won him immediate recognition on both sides of the Atlantic that resulted in American publication of the books, and in establishing Frost's transatlantic reputation. Sales from his works enabled Frost to buy a farm in Franconia, N.H. There, he continued to write poetry with increasing success, publishing a third book, Moutain Interval in 1916. He won a Pulitzer Prize in poetry for New Hampshire, published in 1923. Over the years he received an unprecedented number and range of literary, academic, and public honors, including, in 1961, being the first poet to read a poem at a presidential inauguration; he read for John F. Kennedy. Robert Lee Frost, America's leading 20th-century poet and a four-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, died January 29, 1963, in Boston.

FROST family ODT Contents: a/k/a: Poet Laureate of Vermont America's poet: The leading American poet of the 20th century. Much honored, he was the first to win four Pulitzers. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence; Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. The Road Not Taken A style, form and meter traditionalist, Frost remained aloof and unmoved by the currents stirring poesy in the first half of the twentieth century. He once called Carl Sandburg [1878-1967] a fraud for his more colloquial style.

Wind and Window Flower Send this poem to a friend
Robert Frost (1874 - 1963)
Lovers, forget your love,
And list to the love of these,
She a window flower,
And he a winter breeze.
When the frosty window veil
Was melted down at noon,
And the caged yellow bird
Hung over her in tune,
He marked her through the pane, He could not help but mark, And only passed her by To come again at dark. He was a winter wind, Concerned with ice and snow, Dead weeds and unmated birds, And little of love could know. But he sighed upon the sill, He gave the sash a shake, As witness all within Who lay that night awake. Perchance he half prevailed To win her for the flight From the firelit looking-glass And warm stove-window light. But the flower leaned aside And thought of naught to say, And morning found the breeze A hundred miles away. Now Close the Windows Now close the windows and hush all the fields:
If the trees must, let them silently toss;
No bird is singing now, and if there is,
Be it my loss. It will be long ere the marshes resume,
I will be long ere the earliest bird:
So close the windows and not hear the wind,
But see all wind-stirred. A Patch of Old Snow There's a patch of old snow in a corner
That I should have guessed
Was a blow-away paper the rain Had brought to rest. It is speckled with grime as if Small print overspread it, The news of a day I've forgotten If I ever read it. A Time to Talk When a friend calls to me from the road And slows his horse to a meaning walk, I don't stand still and look around On all the hills I haven't hoed, And shout from where I am, 'What is it?' No, not as there is a time talk. I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground, Blade-end up and five feet tall, And plod: I go up to the stone wall For a friendly visit.

Chronology Biography Robert Frost at his writing desk in Franconia, New Hampshire, 1915. Courtesy of the Jones Library, Inc., Amherst Mass., by permission of the Robert Frost Estate. Few poets have enjoyed the popular success that Robert Frost achieved during his lifetime, and no twentieth-century American poet has had his or her work as widely read and honored. Frost is as much associated with New England as the stone walls that help define its landscape; his reputation, however, transcends regional boundaries. Although he was named Poet Laureate of Vermont only two years before his death, he was for many years the nation’s unofficial poet laureate. Frost collected honors the way some people pick up burrs on country walks. Among his awards were four Pulitzer Prizes, the Bollingen Prize, a Congressional Medal, and dozens of honorary degrees. Perhaps his most moving appearance was his recitation of "The Gift Outright" for millions of Americans at the inauguration of John F. Kennedy in 1961. Three years in England made it possible for Frost to return home as a poet. His first two volumes of poetry

Eliot ... list all writers ROBERT FROST - LIFE STORIES Robert Frost's "Road Not Taken" On this day in 1915 Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" was first published in the Atlantic Monthly . This was just as Frost had returned to America from England, to farm and become famous: "There is room for only one person at the top of the steeple," he would say, "and I always meant that person to be me." Later misfortunes would make him punished and sorry for his choice. Robert Frost in the Dismal Swamp On this day in 1894 twenty-year-old Robert Frost departed for the Dismal Swamp on the Virginia-North Carolina border. He was poor, jobless, unpublished, expelled from Dartmouth College and recently spurned by his high school sweetheart. Adding it all up, Frost packed a small bag, took a train to New York, a steamer to Virginia, and began walking into a soggy heart of darkness.

Love And A Question by Robert Frost A stranger came to the door at eve,
And he spoke the bridegroom fair.
He bore a green-white stick in his hand,
And, for all burden, care.
He asked with the eyes more than the lips
For a shelter for the night,
And he turned and looked at the road afar
Without a window light. The bridegroom came forth into the porch
With, "Let us look at the sky,
And question what of the night to be,
Stranger, you and I." The woodbine leaves littered the yard, The woodbine berries were blue, Autumn, yes, winter was in the wind; "Stranger, I wish I knew." Within, the bride in the dusk alone Bent over the open fire, Her face rose-red with the glowing coal And the thought of the heart's desire. The bridegroom looked at the weary road, Yet saw but her within, And wished her heart in a case of gold And pinned with a silver pin. The bridegroom thought it little to give A dole of bread, a purse, A heartfelt prayer for the poor of God, Or for the rich a curse; But whether or not a man was asked To mar the love of two by harboring woe in the bridal house

Robert Frost's poems use nature as a metaphorical foundation to pass his home-brewed advice and understanding of the world to the reader. Natural processes and features, such as snow in Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening are used to signify events in human lives and draw conclusions about human behaviour.

American poet, one of the finest of rural New England's 20th century pastoral poets. Frost published his first books in Great Britain in the 1910s, but he soon became in his own country the most read and constantly anthologized poet, whose work was made familiar in classrooms and lecture platforms. Frost was awarded the Pulitzer Prize four times. Nature and rural surroundings became for Frost a source for insights into deeper design of life. He once said: "Literature begins with geography."

Mending Wall
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it
And spills the upper boulder in the sun,
And make gaps even two can pass abreast. The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean, No one has seen them made or heard them made, But at spring mending-time we find them there. I let my neighbor know beyond the hill; And on a day we meet to walk the line And set the wall between us once again. We keep the wall between us as we go. To each the boulders that have fallen to each. And some are loaves and some so nearly balls We have to use a spell to make them balance: "Stay where you are until our backs are turned!"
