The Road Not Taken
Stopping By Woods Canis Major On Looking Up... ... Acquainted with the Night
The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. Back To Top Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year.

The Road Not Taken
American poet Robert Frost (1874-1963) reads "The Road Not Taken," "The Pasture," "Mowing," "Birches," "After Apple-Picking," and "The Tuft of Flowers." Set in rural New England, Frost's poetry uses ordinary events and objects from his life in New England as metaphors for complex ideas and feelings. "The Road Not Taken" presents the classic choice of a moment and a lifetime, while "The Tuft of Flowers" explores the meaning of common human experiences. Frost, who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1924, 1931, 1937, and 1943, described a poem as "a momentary stay against confusion." These straightforward but intense readings were made in 1956 at Frost's home.
The Death of the Hired Man
American poet Robert Frost reads "West-Running Brook" and "The Death of the Hired Man." These poems, really miniature plays, use a rural New England milieu to express deeper emotional themes of human relationships and the imminence of death. Frost, who was born in 1874 and died in 1963, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1924, 1931, 1937, and 1943. He once described a poem as "a momentary stay against confusion." These readings were recorded in 1956 at Frost's home.

Robert Frost (1874-1963) Two of America's best 20th-century poets, Robert Frost, left, and Carl Sandburg, met in 1954 at the Silver Jubilee Dinner of the Limited Editions Club to receive awards for their work. AP/Wide World Robert Frost was born in San Francisco in 1874. He moved to New England at the age of eleven and became interested in reading and writing poetry during his high school years in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He was enrolled at Dartmouth College in 1892, and later at Harvard, but never earned a formal degree. Frost drifted through a string of occupations after leaving school, working as a teacher, cobbler, and editor of the Lawrence Sentinel . His first professional poem, "The Butterfly," was published on November 8, 1894, in the New York newspaper The Independent In 1895, Frost married Elinor Miriam White, who became a major inspiration in his poetry until her death in 1938. The couple moved to England in 1912, after their New Hampshire farm failed, and it was abroad that Frost met and was influenced by such contemporary British poets as Edward Thomas, Rupert Brooke , and Robert Graves . While in England, Frost also established a friendship with the poet

Robert Frost wrote a new poem entitled "Dedication" for delivery at the inauguration of John F. Kennedy in 1961, but never read it, because the sun's glare upon the snow blinded Frost from seeing the text. Instead, he recited "The Gift Outright" from memory. The Library holds Frost's original, working draft of "Dedication" as well as this fair copy of the more familiar poem. Robert Frost served as the Library's consultant in poetry (1958-1959) and honorary consultant in the humanities (1958-1963). In addition, Frost recorded readings of his poetry at the Library in 1948, 1953, and 1959 for the Archive of Recorded Poetry and Literature. Read his poem "The Road Not Taken"
Variant Name(s): Robert Lee Frost (full name)
Nationality: American
Career: Poet, essayist, educator, and critic Born in San Francisco, Frost was eleven years old when his father died, and his family moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts, where his paternal grandparents lived. In 1892, Frost graduated from Lawrence High School and shared valedictorian honors with Elinor White, whom he married three years later. After graduation, Frost briefly attended Dartmouth College, taught at grammar schools, worked at a mill, and served as a newspaper reporter. He published a chapbook of poems at his own expense, and contributed the poem "The Birds Do Thus" to the Independent , a New York magazine. In 1897 Frost entered Harvard University as a special student, but left before completing degree requirements because of a bout with tuberculosis and the birth of his second child. Three years later the Frosts' eldest child died, an event which led to marital discord and which, some critics believe, Frost later addressed in his poem "Home Burial." In 1912, having been unable to interest American publishers in his poems, Frost moved his family to a farm in Buckinghamshire, England, where he wrote prolifically, attempting to perfect his distinct poetic voice. During this time, he met such literary figures as Ezra Pound, an American expatriate poet and champion of innovative literary approaches, and Edward Thomas, a young English poet associated with the movement then popular in Great Britain. Frost soon published his first book of poetry

In 1911, Frost sold his farm; he took his family to Scotland and London in the fall of 1912, a trip that proved invaluable to his writing career. Despite trouble getting his work published in America, Frost found a willing publisher in London, and A Boy's Will appeared in 1913.

01 - The Pasture
I'm going out to clean the pasture spring; I'll only stop to rake the leaves away (And wait to watch the water clear, I may): I sha'n't be gone long. You come too. I'm going out to fetch the little calf That's standing by the mother. It's so young, It totters when she licks it with her tongue. I sha'n't be gone long. You come too.
02 - Going for Water
The well was dry beside the door, And so we went with pail and can Across the fields behind the house To seek the brook if still it ran; Not loth to have excuse to go, Because the autumn eve was fair (Though chill), because the fields were ours, And by the brook our woods were there. We ran as if to meet the moon That slowly dawned behind the trees, The barren boughs without the leaves, Without the birds, without the breeze. But once within the wood, we paused Like gnomes that hid us from the moon

Birches When I see birches bend to left and right
Across the lines of straighter darker trees,
I like to think some boy's been swinging them.
But swinging doesn't bend them down to stay.
Ice-storms do that. Often you must have seen them
Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning
After a rain. They click upon themselves
As the breeze rises, and turn many-colored
As the stir cracks and crazes their enamel.
Soon the sun's warmth makes them shed crystal shells
Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust - Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away You'd think the inner dome of heaven had fallen. They are dragged to the withered bracken by the load And they seem not to break; though once they are bowed So low for long they never right themselves: You may see their trunks arching in the woods Years afterwards, trailing their leaves on the ground Like girls on hands and knees that throw their hair Before them over their heads to dry in the sun. But I was going to say when truth broke in With all her matter-of-fact about the ice storm
