FRANKLIN, BENJAMIN
, newspaperman, scientist, inventor, philosopher, politician, and diplomat. Born in Boston, the son of a soap maker, Franklin was apprenticed to his printer brother James at twelve. He was soon contributing witty essays to James's newspaper under various pen names. In 1723 he moved to Philadelphia and launched the Pennsylvania Gazette, which rapidly became the most successful newspaper in the colonies. His Poor Richard's Almanack, which he published from 1733 to 1758, was studded with wry aphorisms Franklin borrowed from numerous sources and frequently rewrote. He helped launch projects to pave, clean, and light Philadelphia's streets and founded the American Philosophical Society, the first circulating library in America, and an academy that grew into the University of Pennsylvania. In 1743 he invented a heat-efficient stove to warm houses. Retiring from newspapering in 1748, he turned to the study of electricity. His observations, including his famous experiment with a kite to verify the identity of electricity and lightning, won him world fame. Already a leader in Pennsylvania's politics, Franklin went to England in 1757 to represent the colony in its quarrel with the descendants of William Penn. He remained there until 1775, becoming agent for several other colonies and de facto ambassador for all thirteen. At first a strong believer in the value of a united empire, he grew disillusioned with England's corrupt politics and aristocratic society, though he made lasting friendships with many prominent men. In 1765 American objections to the Stamp Act caught him by surprise, but he quickly joined the opponents. His testimony before Parliament helped persuade the members to repeal the measure.

On learning of Benjamin Franklin’s death in the spring of 1790, the French National Assembly, the “temporary” French government established after the initial stages of the French Revolution, decreed three days of mourning, a fitting tribute for the man who was for most eighteenth-century European intellectuals the quintessential American. At his death Franklin ranked with Voltaire and Rousseau as a philosophe, one of those multifaceted geniuses whose writings helped inspire the wave of intellectual and political freedom which swept western Europe in the closing years of the eighteenth century. Unlike most philosophers, however, Franklin had the chance to put his ideas into practice in the founding of a new nation: “He seized the lightening from the sky and the scepter from the hand of tyrants,” proclaimed the philosopher-scientist Turgot.
Franklin’s start in Philadelphia was uncertain, but gradually his hard work, business sense, social talents, community service, political abilities, and literary skill gained him prosperity and public favor. With the free time provided by his growing wealth, Franklin experimented with electricity, making discoveries which earned him international acclaim. His reputation in Philadelphia as a philanthropic leader prompted his entrance into politics, and his local political success led to his appointment as agent for Pennsylvania in England. As dissatisfaction with Britain spread in the colonies, Franklin’s growing international reputation led to his appointment as agent for other colonies with grievances against England.

Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin was born to a poor soap boiler on January 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was one of many children in his family, and he learned to appreciate the rewards of hard work at age twelve as an apprentice at his brother James' printing shop. By the age of seventeen, Franklin's skills as a printer had become so strong that at twenty-two he left Boston to open his own printing shop in Pennsylvania. This is where he developed his two most famous publications, The Pennsylvania Gazette , the most popular newspaper in the colonies, and the annual Poor Richard's Almanac . Franklin was one of the first printers to use cartoons in his publications in order to accommodate the people who had not learned to read. He believed that his publications were a way to get information to every person, not just those who could read. In Pennsylvania, Franklin founded organizations, became involved in the community, and assembled a vast collection of inventions that would allow people to live better lives. He started the first circulatory library known as the American Philosophical Society and founded an academy that would soon become the University of Pennsylvania. As a journalist, Franklin was constantly putting on and taking off his reading glasses. He became frustrated with the repetition of this task, so he cut the bottom half of his reading classes and put them in the frames of another pair of spectacles. He had given birth to the bifocals, which many of us still use today.

Benjamin Franklin — Inventor, Statesman, Diplomat (1706-1790)
An enormously resourceful and imaginative man, Ben Franklin developed his own solutions to problems. When his fireplace did not give out enough heat, Franklin invented a wood stove; instead of using two pairs of glasses for different distances, he invented bifocals. As a young adult he wrote a runaway bestseller, and as an older man he charmed the king of France into supporting the colonies in the Revolutionary War. Your students will explore the art of language by using good writing skills and humor to draw attention to a problem in their community. Benjamin Franklin Quotes
By heaven we understand a state of happiness infinite in degree, and endless in duration. Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. He that's secure is not safe. Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech. In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. Any fool can criticise, condemn and complain, and most fools do. I haven't failed, I've found 10,000 ways that don't work. There was never a good war or a bad peace. Whatever is begun in anger ends in shame. Anger is never without a reason but seldom a good one. Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship. Wealth is not his that has it, but his who enjoys it. He does not possess wealth; it possesses him. No nation was ever ruined by trade. The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself. Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.

n taking his own advice of, "Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that's the stuff life is made of." (Poor Richard's Almanack), Benjamin Franklin became Colonial America's best known writer, inventor, businessman, printer, abolitionist, philosopher, diplomat, patriot, humorist, scientist, postmaster, editor, philanthropist, and musician. Although a prodigious essayist, wit, and correspondent, Franklin's major literary works are his Poor Richard's Almanack and autobiography, The Private Life of the Late Benjamin Franklin, LLD. Franklin is often described as a genius and among his contributions to American life are the Franklin stove, bifocal glasses, lightening rods, watertight bulkheads for ships, fire insurance, the odometer, and the long arm used to reach overhead objects.
Why Benjamin Franklin is important to the ideals of freedom: Benjamin Franklin, as one of America's Founding Fathers, a member of the Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence used his skillful diplomacy in the Constitutional Convention of 1787 to hammer out the terms of state representation in the legislative branch of government. During the Revolutionary War Franklin secured America's recognition as a nation by the major European nation of France and convinced France to provide support and aid in the Revolutionary War against Great Britain. Franklin went on to secure the Treaty of Paris, which formally ended the Revolutionary War.

Born on January 17, 1706 in Boston as the 15th child of a soap-boiler, FRANKLIN first learnt the art of printing, and over many years he published himself a newspaper and a well known calendar. He founded the ‘Philosophical Society’ and established the first public library on the American continent. Between 1757 and 1776 he represented the interests of the North American colonies in Britain and became a leading figure in the independence movement. He contributed to a significant extent to the formulation of the Constitution of the United States. He died on April 17, 1790 in Philadelphia. http://www.ushistory.org/franklin/facts
Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston on January 17, 1706. He was the tenth son of soap maker, Josiah Franklin. Benjamin's mother was Abiah Folger, the second wife of Josiah. In all, Josiah would father 17 children. Josiah intended for Benjamin to enter into the clergy. However, Josiah could only afford to send his son to school for one year and clergymen needed years of schooling. But, as young Benjamin loved to read he had him apprenticed to his brother James, who was a printer. After helping James compose pamphlets and set type which was grueling work, 12-year-old Benjamin would sell their products in the streets.
Apprentice Printer
When Benjamin was 15 his brother started The New England Courant the first "newspaper" in Boston. Though there were two papers in the city before James's Courant , they only reprinted news from abroad. James's paper carried articles, opinion pieces written by James's friends, advertisements, and news of ship schedules. Benjamin wanted to write for the paper too, but he knew that James would never let him. After all, Benjamin was just a lowly apprentice. So Ben began writing letters at night and signing them with the name of a fictional widow, Silence Dogood. Dogood was filled with advice and very critical of the world around her, particularly concerning the issue of how women were treated. Ben would sneak the letters under the print shop door at night so no one knew who was writing the pieces. They were a smash hit, and everyone wanted to know who was the real "Silence Dogood."
