To Mr. Francis Leggett
N EW Y ORK
10th April, 1895 D EAR F RIEND It is impossible to express my gratitude for your kindly inviting me to your country seat [Ridgely]. I am involved in a mistake now and find it impossible for me to come tomorrow. Tomorrow I have a class at Miss Andrews' of 40 W. 9th Street. As I was given to understand by Miss MacLeod that that class could be postponed, I was only too glad at the prospect of joining the company tomorrow. But I find that Miss MacLeod was mistaken and Miss Andrews came to tell me that she could not by any means stop the class tomorrow or even give notice to the members, who are about 50 or 60 in number. In view of this I sincerely regret my inability and hope that Miss MacLeod and Mrs. Sturges will understand that it is an unavoidable circumstance, and not the will, that stands in the way of my taking advantage of your kind invitation. I shall only be too glad to come day after tomorrow, or any other day this week, as it suits you. Ever sincerely yours

52. Fires1800s
By this time the fire had spread from the Hass Shoe Company buildingto the adjoining Francis H. Leggett Co. Canning Factory.
http://riversidenjhistory.com/Fires1800s.html
1800's About 1867. “Two beautiful and refined” daughters of the town Blacksmith, known only as “Smith Mike,” perished in the first recorded fatal fire. The young women were engaged in filling a lamp with oil at the horseshoe shop on Taylor Street. According to Hiram Torrie in the Riverside Press, one held a lighted match too close while the other was doing the filling. An explosion followed and the two were severely burned and died soon after. Their father was so distraught “he did not long survive.”
March 2, 1882 , 3:55 am. A defective stove flue in a basement classroom ignited this major fire in the newly constructed St. Peter’s Church at Middleton and Scott Streets. Most of the damage was done before the fire was discovered and a bucket brigade failed to save anything. The church and its schoolrooms were completely destroyed but the shell survived and the building was rebuilt.

, 8:30 pm. The first fire to ravage William F. Taubel’s Hosiery Mills did considerable damage to his first plant on Clay Street and left 50 men out of work.

Everyone is talking about how much they enjoyed it and how wonderful you are! I just knew that you could shake them up! It set the stage for the afternoon and I can truly say that I have never delivered, organised or prepared a session that more than met the aims and objectives in the ways this one did. God they were bopping. Thanks a million ' JANET MORGAN, Quality Assurance Manager 'It's now 6.20 yet my head is full of good things! Thank you for giving so much of yourself!. Presently the community of Pierce County is working hard to be of great interest to all. Recently, I received some mail from John Guss who wrote the following: We are a very proud community dating back to the early 1800's. We have a tremendous amount of history which we are now beginning to compile and take notice. We have begun by forming an historical society for Pierce County. Here visitors and citizens of the community alike will be able to have the opportunity to learn more about the community than what they have currently observed. There are already several restoration projects taking place such as the city jail built in 1894, the Civil War prison site where over 5000 Union soldiers who had been previously imprisoned at Andersonville , were held while General Sherman marched his forces to seize Savannah, the promotion of the 1875 courthouse, Shiloh church, the first church in Pierce County, the Brantley Brick Warehouse built in the early 1900's, the Blackshear Presbyterian Church dating back to 1872, homes dating to the Civil War, and much much more.
