After gaining fame as a novelist, Forster spent his 46 remaining years publishing mainly short stories and non-fiction. Of his five important novels four appeared before World War I. Forster's major concern was that individuals should 'connect the prose with the passion' within themselves, and that one of the most exacting aspect of the novel is prophecy. "If human nature does alter it will be because individuals manage to look at themselves in a new way. Here and there people - a very few people, but a few novelists are among them - are trying to do this. Every institution and vested interest in against such a search: organized religion, the State, the family in its economic aspect, have nothing to gain, and it is only when outward prohibitions weaken that it can proceed: history conditions it to that extent." Logic! Good gracious! What rubbish! How can I tell what I think till I see what I say? Think before you speak is criticism's motto; speak before you think creation's. Failure or success seem to have been allotted to men by their stars. But they retain the power of wriggling, of fighting with their star or against it, and in the whole universe the only really interesting movement is this wriggle. The most successful career must show a waste of strength that might have removed mountains, and the most unsuccessful is not that of the man who is taken unprepared, but of him who has prepared and is never taken.

By Stephen Spender Two years ago, a young American writer living in London remarked to me how wonderful he thought it was to be living at a time when E. M. Forster was alive. Believing that Forster, though almost ninety, would still be pleased at such recognition, I arranged for the young writer to visit him at his Cambridge rooms so imaginatively provided by the Fellows of King's, his old college. Afterward my American friend told me that in the course of their conversation, Forster had inquired whether he had ever been to Greece: to which he replied no, that it seemed impossible (on account of those Colonels) to go now. Search all of E.M. Forster E. M. Forster (1879-1970) was a noted English author and critic and a member of the Bloomsbury group.
Edward Morgan Forster was born in London on January 1, 1871 as the son of an architect, who died before his only child was two years old. Forster's childhood and much of his adult life was dominated by his mother and his aunts. Forster's years at Tonbridge School as a teenager were difficult - he suffered from the cruelty of his classmates. Forster attended King's College, Cambridge (1897-1901), where he met members of the later formed Bloomsbury group. After graduating he travelled in Italy and Greece with his mother, and on his return began to write essays and short stories for the liberal Independent Review . In 1905 Foster spent several months in Germany as tutor to the children of the Countess von Armin.
His first novel, Where Angels Fear To Tread appeared in 1905. In the following year he lectured on Italian art and history for the Cambridge Local Lectures Board.

Forster (1879-1970) We take a look at the life and times of this highly respected English novelist Edward Morgan Forster was a writer much concerned with the interplay of people's personalities and the conflicts that arose between English Edwardian conventions and the human instinct for spontaneity. He was born in London on 1st January 1879, the only child of a doting mother (his father died when he was only two years of age) and a collection of formidable aunts. He became a day-boy at Tonbridge School, before going to King's College, Cambridge, were he struck up a close friendship with the eccentric don, Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson. Here he became a member of its 'secret society', the Apostles, which influenced him profoundly, instilling in him concepts of individualism and personal loyalty. His Cambridge connections also led to his involvement with the Bloomsbury Group and to the development of his notion of liberal humanism. Following his graduation, with a degree in Classics and History, he started to pen short stories, some of which were published in the

Edward Morgan Forster

Chapter I: The Bertolini
The Signora had no business to do it,” said Miss Bartlett, “no business at all. She promised us south rooms with a view close together, instead of which here are north rooms, looking into a courtyard, and a long way apart. Oh, Lucy!” “And a Cockney, besides!” said Lucy, who had been further saddened by the Signora’s unexpected accent. “It might be London.” She looked at the two rows of English people who were sitting at the table; at the row of white bottles of water and red bottles of wine that ran between the English people; at the portraits of the late Queen and the late Poet Laureate that hung behind the English people, heavily framed; at the notice of the English church (Rev. Cuthbert Eager, M. A. Oxon.), that was the only other decoration of the wall. “Charlotte, don’t you feel, too, that we might be in London? I can hardly believe that all kinds of other things are just outside. I suppose it is one’s being so tired.”
