Ford Madox Ford is another one of those writers who is basically only read and respected by other authors. (In fact, these books tend to go out of print and stay out for long periods of time.) His other entry on this list, The Good Soldier for them, it's hard to care what happens to them.

The Good Soldier
Modern Library Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century (30)
Author Info: Ford Maddox Ford
The novel tells the story of the 9 year friendship between two couples. The Good Soldier of the title has a "bad heart" and a wife he doesn't love. The narrator's wife has a "bad heart" also and when the two couples meet in Europe they seem to form an ideal foursome. However, as the story unfolds, the
narrator reveals that none of these people are who they seem to be on the surface. N.B.I wrote this review in Fall '98, it was one of my first. But I recently reread the book (for Ford's birthday) and this edition had an Intro by Ford that caused an epiphany and tied into my recent review of Madame Bovary . Please take a look at that review, specifically the note following it , for more on The Good Soldier. Thanks; OJ (12/17/99)

The Good Soldier
Ford Madox Ford
7th May 1997 at Martine's House
Synopsis
"You would have said he was just exactly the sort of chap that you could have trusted your wife with..." This is Edward Ashburnham, a first-rate soldier and a perfect English gentleman, a man whose single (fatal) flaw is his blind ruthlessness in affairs of love. Our only window on the strange tangle of events surrounding Ashburnham is provided by his friend, the husband he deceives. Ford's narrator entrusts us with everything he can remember, and these memories weave themselves into one of the most extraordinary tales of passion and betrayal ever told.
What we thought
What other people thought
In The Good Soldier Ford triumphantly found his true subject ... the English "gentleman", the "black and merciless things" which lie behind that facade ... I don't know how many times in nearly forty years I have come back to this novel of Ford's, every time to discover a new aspect to admire.

First published in 1915, Ford Madox Ford's The Good Soldier begins, famously and ominously, "This is the saddest story I have ever heard." The book then proceeds to confute this pronouncement at every turn, exposing a world less sad than pathetic, and more shot through with hypocrisy and deceit than its incredulous narrator, John Dowell, cares to imagine. Somewhat forgotten as a classic, The Good Soldier has been called everything from the consummate novelist's novel to one of the greatest English works of the century. And although its narrative hookthe philandering of an otherwise noble manno longer shocks, its unerring cadences and doleful inevitabilities proclaim an enduring appeal.
Ford's novel revolves around two couples: Edward Ashburnhamthe title's soldierand his capable if off-putting wife, Leonora; and long-transplanted Americans John and Florence Dowell. The foursome's ostensible amiability, on display as they pass parts of a dozen pre-World War I summers together in Germany, conceals the fissures in each marriage. John is miserably mismatched with the garrulous, cuckolding Florence; and Edward, dashing and sentimental, can't refrain from falling in love with women whose charms exceed Leonora's. Predictably, Edward and Florence conduct their affair, an indiscretion only John seems not to notice. After the deaths of the two lovers, and after Leonora explains much of the truth to John, he recounts the events of their four lives with an extended inflection of outrage. From his retrospective perch, his recollections simmer with a bitter skepticism even as he expresses amazement at how much he overlooked.

Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939)
The grandson of English Pre-Raphaelite painter Ford Madox Brown, Ford was born with the decidedly German-sounding name Ford Hermann Hueffer. His early writing career was productive, including several historical novels. In 1915 he published the novel for which he is probably most well-known, The Good Soldier , and also enlisted in the army. He was invalided home from France in 1917, and changed his name from Hueffer to Ford in 1919. (l-r) Ford, Joyce, Pound Ford spent much of the 1920s in Paris, where he founded and edited the influential Transatlantic Review , in which were published writers like James Joyce, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, e.e. cummings, as well as Hemingway.
