Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) said that in writing, everything is a matter of style, of the distinctive way one expresses oneself. Flaubert's life was remarkable mostly for the way he devoted himself to writing fiction. He once told a friend, "I have more imagination than heart." Born into a thrifty, prosperous family in Rouen, Flaubert was the son of a surgeon. His mother encouraged him to read literature and write plays while he was still a child. He attended school in Rouen and began to study law in Paris, but in 1844 he suffered the first of many attacks of unconsciousness - possibly epilepsy - so he gave up law and returned home to live with his widowed mother. Like many of his contemporaries, including the poet Charles Baudelaire and his relative Guy de Maupassant, Flaubert was afflicted with syphilis. In his Dictionary of Accepted Opinions

"You must not think that feeling is everything... Art is nothing without form." Birthplace

Rouen, France
Education
He reluctantly studied law in Paris, but abandoned his studies due to bad health.
Did you know?
An eclectically playful man, at one point in his travels he developed an obsession with the camel ("I am quite worn out trying to imitate its cry"). Close friends, including Henry James, maintained that he never matured beyond 20, when he suffered a major epileptic episode. Critical verdict The unjudgmental, ultra-realistic portrayal of adultery in Madame Bovary was considered immoral: Flaubert, his publisher and printer were all prosecuted, though they escaped conviction. Unconcerned, Flaubert remarked that "I would not like to die before having emptied a few more buckets of shit on the heads of my fellow men." Henry James called him a "novelist's novelist," while Nabokov declared that "without Flaubert there would have been no Marcel Proust, no James Joyce...

Flaubert, Gustave Biography
Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) French novelist of the realist school, best-known for MADAME BOVARY (1857), a story of adultery and unhappy love affair of the provincial wife Emma Bovary. As a writer Flaubert was a perfectionist, who did not make a distinction between a beautiful or ugly subject: all was in the style. "The Idea," he wrote, "exists only by virtue of its form" - its elements included the perfect word, cunningly contrived and verified rhythms, and a genuine architectural structure. "Has it ever happened to you," Leon went on, "to come across some vague idea of one's own in a book, some dim image that comes back to you from afar, and as the completest expression of your own slightest sentiment?"
"I have experienced it," she replied.
"That is why," he said, "I especially love the poets. I think verse more tender than prose, and that it moves far more easily to tears."
(from Madame Bovary In 1846 Flaubert met the writer Louise Colet. They corresponded regularly and she became Flaubert's mistress although they met infrequently. Colet gave in Lui (1859) her account of their relationship. After the death of both his father and his married sister, Flaubert moved at Croisset, the family's country home near Rouen. Until he was 50 years old, Flaubert lived with his mother. The household also included his niece Caroline. His maxim was: "Be regular and orderly in your life like a bourgeois, so that you may be violent and original in your work."

Sentimental Education
Gustave Flaubert
5th July 2001 at Max's House
Synopsis
Flaubert's acceptance of all the realities of life (rather than his remorseless exposure of its illusions) principally recommends what many regard as a more mature work than Madame Bovary , if not the greatest French novel of the 19th century. In this story of a young man's romantic attachment to an older woman, the modern English reader can appreciate the accuracy, the artistry and the insight with which Flaubert reconstructed in one masterpiece the very fibre of his times.
What we thought
A bit of a mixed response and all except Sam failed to finish. Sam is definitely our completer finisher as she's the one who hated it most as well! The main problem we had with the book is the lack of action or plot. Frederic is a pretty unsympathetic character who isn't really going anywhere so the book is rather hard to engage with. There's no doubt the writing is of a very high quality but it's all a bit dispassionate. That said both Martine and Nicki were enjoying the book and aiming to finish it.

Description of the Art Work
Flaubert's objective recording of every trait or incident that could illuminate the psychology of his characters transformed a commonplace tale of a faithless wife into a tragedy of shattered romantic illusion. "Salammbo", 1862 : a novel about ancient Carthage in which he set his sombre story of Hamilicar's daughter Salammbo an entirely fictitious character against the authentic historical background of the revolt of the Mercenaries against Carthage in 240-237 B.C. "The Temptation of St.Anthony", 1874 : Dramatic prose- poem, about the Saint alone in the desert besieged by carnal temptations and by philosophic doubt. "November" (written 1842)
Description of incident
1857 France-Paris: The author was taken to court for "outrage aux bonnes moeurs" as depicted in "Madame Bovary." He was acquitted on the ground that the passages cited by the prosecution, though reprehensible, were few in number compared with the extent of the whole work. His counsel pleaded that in depicting vice, the author was only endeavoring to promote virtue.
