As a writer Flaubert was a perfectionist, who did not make a distinction between a beautiful or ugly subject: all was in the style. The idea, he argued, only exists by virtue of its form - its elements included the perfect word, cunningly contrived and verified rhythms, and a genuine architectural structure. "Has it ever happened to you," Leon went on, "to come across some vague idea of one's own in a book, some dim image that comes back to you from afar, and as the completest expression of your own slightest sentiment?" "I have experienced it," she replied. "That is why," he said, "I especially love the poets. I think verse more tender than prose, and that it moves far more easily to tears." (from Madame Bovary Flaubert started to write during his school years. A disappointment in his teens - Flaubert fell in love with Elisa Schlésinger, who was married and some 10 years his senior - inspired much of his early writing. In the 1840s Flaubert studied law at Paris, a brief episode in his life, and in 1844 he had a nervous attack. "I was cowardly in my youth," Flaubert wrote once to George Sand. "I was afraid of life." He recognized from suffering a nervous disease, although it could have been epilepsy. However, the diagnosis changed Flaubert's life. He failed his law exams and decided to devote himself to literature. In this he was helped by his father who bought him a house at Croisset, on the River Seine between Paris and Rouen.

As the son of a successful surgeon, he was introduced early on to life’s realities of illness and death. Studying briefly under his father, Flaubert’s childhood and early adulthood were marked by the atmosphere of the hospital, of mourning, and of suffering. In 1840, he left for Paris, where he briefly studied law, but he ended his legal studies in favor of a writing career after he failed his second year law exams. Madame Bovary (1857) is weighted with images of a vain and hollow society of dim-witted characters, an image which is in harmony with his distaste for the bourgeois society. First appearing in Revue de Paris, Madame Bovary Salambo (1863) and The Sentimental Education (1869). Flaubert's long novel, Boulevard Et Pécuchet , was left unfinished at his death. Flaubert died of a cerebral hemorrhage on May 8, 1880.

Flaubert, hijo de un médico, nació en Ruán, Normandía, el 12 de diciembre de 1821. Estudió derecho en París durante un corto periodo de tiempo, pero su frágil salud le obligó a abandonarlo. Fue entonces cuando decidió dedicarse a escribir. Entre 1849 y 1851 viajó, en compañía de un amigo, por Grecia y Oriente Próximo, una experiencia que le inspiró los escenarios exóticos de dos de sus novelas. Afectado por un desorden de tipo nervioso, transcurrió la mayor parte de su vida de forma tranquila, junto a su familia, en Croisset, un lugar de campo cerca de Ruán, donde recibía frecuentes visitas de otros notables escritores. Allí murió el 8 de mayo de 1880. La primera novela de Flaubert, y la más leída también, Madame Bovary , publicada por primera vez en 1857, hubo de enfrentarse muy pronto a un importante proceso legal. Tanto el autor como el editor fueron acusados por la inmoralidad de la novela. A pesar de haber sido absueltos, el escándalo empañó el lanzamiento del libro, y no fue hasta más tarde cuando fue reconocida como una de las obras maestras de la literatura francesa. He would occasionally spend an entire night writing to find that he had only composed a few sentences. This explains his exceedingly small output. His greatest and most famous work is undoubtedly Madame Bovary (1857). This novel describes the disenchantment of the French bourgeois. Other noted works of his include Salammbo (1862), a historical novel set in ancient Carthage, L'Education Sentimentale (1869) and La Tentation de Saint Antoine (1874). Among his friends were writers Georges Sand, Maupassant, Edmond de Goncourt and Jules de Goncourt. Realism The word "realism" is used with different meanings in many fields - philosophy, art, and literature, for example. Each have movements or schools characterized by the name "realism". In the visual arts and literature, realism is a middle 19th century movement which started in France. The realists sought to render accurately everyday characters, situations, and dilemmas.
