A Short Guide To
F. Scott Fitzgerald

The novelist and short story writer F.Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) was renowned for living the 1920s version of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. The drinking, partying culture of the American Jazz Age is the foundation for much of his writing but it was also his personal downfall.
His writing describes his society. Tales of excess; people sliding across the surface of life without probing for meaning. It was the Prohibition era in the US, but that didn't stop the wealthy and well-connected from partying hard. Fitzgerald completed the picture with his marriage to the Southern belle, Zelda Sayle. Together they were the centre of the social whirl, whether in New York or living the ex-pat life in Paris.
His career as a novelist was stalled under the pressure to fund their lifestyle. His spending always exceeded his income; he wrote frequently for newspapers in order to survive (hence the large number of short stories to his name) and tried his hand at screen writing in Hollywood. Much of his writing was neither critically acclaimed nor a commercial success in his lifetime. Only in the 1950s was he accepted as worthy of inclusion in the canon of American literature.
The mental illness of his wife Zelda led to Fitzgerald committing her to an asylum, and she lived the rest of her life in a range of such institutions until her death in a fire in 1948. While Zelda was a heavy drinker Fitzgerald himself was an alcoholic, which may have contributed to his early death at 44, having failed to achieve the recognition he deserved.

F SCOTT FITZGERALD
"What people are ashamed of usually makes a good story." Birthplace

Minnesota, US
Education
Princeton University, where he concentrated on short stories rather than study.
Other jobs
He joined the army in 1917 and was later a Hollywood screenwriter. Did you know? Fitzgerald polished the script of Gone With The Wind. Critical verdict Famous overnight for his first novel This Side of Paradise, he became known more for his lifestyle than his literature and is still remembered as the glamorous, self-destructive symbol of the Jazz Age ("It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire", he wrote). It was only after his death that his importance - or perhaps the importance of The Great Gatsby - was fully recognised.

G e n i u s is the ability to put into e f f e c t what is in your mind . There's no other d e f i n i ti o n of it." ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald His life ended with a heart attack at 44 and writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) "died thinking he was an absolute failure ," explained writer Irwin Shaw. "Today he is one of the icons of American fiction." The New York Times eulogized that Fitzgerald "epitomized all the sad young men of the post-war generation." Fitzgerald said, "An author ought to write for the youth of his generation, the critics of the next, and the schoolmasters of ever afterward." His works have been translated into 35 languages and sell about 500,000 copies a year. "Show me a hero and I will write you a tragedy," observed Fitzgerald, born on this day in St Paul, Minnesota. His classics The Great Gatsby (1925) and Tender is the Night (1934) chronicled the Jazz Age and are considered the finest in American literature. "All good writing ," he believed, "is swimming under water and holding your breath His career soared like a meteor with the publication of his first novel

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He would live in St. Paul and then New York until his father was fired from his job forcing the Fitzgerald’s back to Minnesota. At the age of thirteen, F. Scott Fitzgerald had his first work published in the school newspaper. After attending the Newman School, he was accepted into Princeton, where he would focus on writing for various clubs and organizations rather than his studies. He was placed on academic probation in 1917 which led to F. Scott Fitzgerald enlisting in the Army. While stationed at Camp Sheridan in Alabama in 1918, he met Zelda Sayre, his future wife. F. Scott was enamored with Zelda but she would break their first engagement due to F. Scott’s low salary and lack of success to that point.
F. Scott had been trying to become accomplished since his enlistment in the Army where he started his first attempt at a novel originally entitled “The Romantic Egotist.” He would submit this story to Charles Scribner’s Sons only to have it rejected for revision. By 1919, “The Romantic Egotist” had become This Side of Paradise and was accepted by Maxwell Perkins at Scribner’s. Before the novel was published in 1920, F. Scott began gaining attention to his various short stories which were written as a way to gain income. Once

    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) is best known for his novels and short stories, which chronicle the excesses of America's 'Jazz Age' during the 1920s. Born into a fairly wealthy family in St Paul, Minnesota, in 1896. Fitzgerald attended, but never graduated from Princeton University. Here he mingled with the monied classes from the Eastern Seaboard who obsessed him for the rest of his life. In 1917, he was drafted into the army, but he never saw active service abroad. Instead, he spent much of his time writing and re-writing his first novel This Side of Paradise , which became an instant success on its publication in 1920. In the same year, he married the beautiful Zelda Sayre and together they embarked on a rich life of endless parties. With his beautiful wife he joined the expatriate writers in Paris, but only for a time, traveling widely and spending lavishly, living on the Riviera, in New York, and in Washington, a participant and a critic of the extravagance of the Jazz age.
