FITZGERALD, F. SCOTT
, novelist, chronicler of the jazz age. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Fitzgerald had the good fortune—and the misfortune—to be a writer who summed up an era. The son of an alcoholic failure from Maryland and an adoring, intensely ambitious mother, he grew up acutely conscious of wealth and privilege—and of his family's exclusion from the social elite. After entering Princeton in 1913, he became a close friend of Edmund Wilson and John Peale Bishop and spent most of his time writing lyrics for Triangle Club theatrical productions and analyzing how to triumph over the school's intricate social rituals. He left Princeton without graduating and used it as the setting for his first novel, This Side of Paradise (1920). It was perfect literary timing. The twenties were beginning to roar, bathtub gin and flaming youth were on everyone's lips, and the handsome, witty Fitzgerald seemed to be the ideal spokesman for the decade. With his stunning southern wife, Zelda, he headed for Paris and a mythic career of drinking from hip flasks, dancing until dawn, and jumping into outdoor fountains to end the party. Behind this façade was a writer struggling to make enough money to match his extravagant lifestyle and still produce serious work. His second novel, The Beautiful and the Damned (1922), which recounted an artist's losing fight with dissipation, was badly flawed. His next

F. Scott Fitzgerald grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota—a social landscape Edmund Wilson called “the middle west of large cities and country clubs.” From boyhood Fitzgerald experienced both the conflict and the fluidity of class in American life. On his father’s side, his family, though they were descended from Francis Scott Key and possessed of what Fitzgerald called that “poor old shattered word ‘breeding’,” had come to be part of the genteel lower middle-class. His mother’s people, the McQuillans, were immigrant entrepreneurs who “had the money.” Not surprisingly, his mother nurtured social ambitions in her only son, and Fitzgerald was sent east to a Catholic prep school (Newman School in New Jersey), and then to Princeton.
At Princeton Fitzgerald courted academic trouble as he pursued success on the parallel tracks which were to mark his career as a writer. He wrote lyrics for the Triangle Club’s shows and published poems and stories in the

    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940), regarded as the literary spokesman for the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s in America, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. His family had some social standing but little money, and it was only with help from a maiden aunt that he was able to go to an eastern preparatory school and then on to Princeton, where he said his family hoped that he would attend to his studies and stop "wasting his time scribbling." He left college before graduating to accept a commission as a second lieutenant in the Regular Army during World War I, but he spent most of his time in the service writing his first novel, which he revised several times before it was published in 1920 as

Zelda Sayre to F. Scott Fitzgerald
    The Lovers Zelda Sayre
was born in montgomery, Alabama. Daughter of an Alabama High Court judge, Zelda was strikingly beautiful but wild, intelligent but unevenly educated. She married Scott Fitzgerald in 1920 and they had one daughter, Frances (known as Scottie), in 1921. After several years of high and happy living, financed by Scott's success as a writer and shaped by his drinking, her behavior became more erratic and obsessive, and their relationship more strained. In 1930 she had her first breakdown. The years that followed were largely spent in mental institutions, but also saw the publication of her confused and moving novel Save Me the Waltz (1932). She had considerable talent, which never quite fulfilled itself. Zelda died in 1948, victim of an asylum fire at the Highland Hospital, Asheville, North Carolina. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald

He gained instant fame with his first novel This Side of Paradise (1920). They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand. They think, deep in their hearts, that they are better than we are because we had to discover the compensations and refuges of life for ourselves. Even when they enter deep into our world or sink below us, they still think that they are better than we are. They are different.

This link leads to artifacts, teaching tips and discussion questions for this author. F. Scott Fitzgerald's best-known work, The Great Gatsby , has made him familiar to generations of students of American literature. Though the book sold poorly when it was first published, it has since become one of the most widely read American novels and justified Fitzgerald's reputation as one of the foremost chroniclers of the 1920s, which he famously labeled the "Jazz Age."
Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and educated primarily in East Coast schools. He attended Princeton University for three years, leaving without his degree to enlist in the U.S. army during World War I, though peace was declared before he could see combat. While stationed in Alabama, he met and courted Zelda Sayre, who initially rejected him. He went to New York in 1919 to seek his fortune as a writer and to win over Zelda. His first novel
