CRIMINAL BUSINESS BREAKING INTO MONTPELIER HOUSE. William Jagoe alias John Lee
The prisoner was found guilty, and proving to be a returned convict, was sentenced to eight years penal servitude. GRIEVOUS ASSAULT. Laurence Daly
Mr. O'Hea, with Mr., Gillman, defended the prisoner, and called Mr. Denis Murpy as to character. The defense was, that the prisoner was under the impression that the prosecutors had been throwing stones at him.
The jury found him guilty of an assault occasioning actual bodily harm, one of the jurors in answer to his Worship amidst much laughter, stating that they had come to that decision without being influenced either by Mr. O'Hea's eloquent speeches or his worship's able charge.
The Court sentenced the prisoner to twelve months imprisonment at hard labour, observing that in his experience as Assistant Barrister for 20 years in this and the adjoining County he had never heard of a more unprovoked assault. Previous to that case he could assert that it was as safe to walk the roads of this county at night as the high streets of London in the day time, and that it was his duty, by the sentence in this case, to prevent such a thing occurring again. RIOT AND ASSAULT AT AHERINA.

Parish of Rathfarnham.
(i.e., Rath-Fearannain or Farnan's Rath The Parish of Rathfarnham in the seventeenth century appears as containing the Townlands of Rathfarnham, Terenure, Kimmage, Rathgar, Little Newtown, Butterfield, Scholarstown, and St. John's Leas. It now contains the Townlands of Ballyroan (i.e., Baile Ruadhain, or Rowan's Townland), Butterfield, Kimmage, Newtown Little, Old Orchard, Rathfarnham, Rathgar (i.e., Rath-gearr, or Short Rath), Scholarstown, Terenure (i.e., Tir-an-iubhair, or the Land of the Yew), Whiteball, and Willbrook. The objects of archaeological interest in the Parish are the Castle of Rathfarnham and a fragment of the Old Church. Rathfarnham and its Castle The Castle of Rathfarnham, formerly the seat of the Right Hon. Francis Blackburne, sometime Lord Chancellor of Ireland, and still in the occupation of his descendants, is one of the few fine residences of any antiquity in the metropolitan county. It was originally a fortified and embattled structure built in the reign of Queen Elizabeth by that great legal ecclesiastic, Archbishop Loftus, but owing to alterations in the eighteenth century carried out in a Grecian style of architecture, it now presents the appearance of a modern house. This castle is not the first dwelling which has occupied its site. Soon after the Anglo-Norman Conquest the lands of Rathfarnham, then joining on the north those within the manor of St. Sepulchre and on the east those within the parish of Taney, had been given to a family called le Bret, and during their ownership, which lasted for many generations, a manorial residence stood upon their property.

In June, J. E. Bosanquet placed an advertisment in the Examiner, announcing his annual visit to Cork, and his willingness to execute portrait miniatures on ivory, for one guinea and upward, at 62 Patrick Street. To prevent mistakes, 'Mr. B.' stressed that he had no professional connection with a young man of the same name, who was also canvassing for orders. This latter artist is doubtless the watercolourist J. E. Bosanquet, described by Strickland as 'slovenly and of little merit', who is represented by several charming Cork landscapes in the Crawford collection. [W. G. Strickland, Vol.1, p. 72]
At Clonakilty, William Bence-Jones commenced building Lisselane, a house designed, in a simplified French chateau style, by Lewis Vulliamy. [M. Bence-Jones, p. 188]
The 1852 Exhibition was by no means devoted solely to the fine arts. Three of the four transepts were given over to the display of, amongst other things, whiskey, ale, porter, pearl barley, 'Norton's Projectile Shells', hydraulic presses, Valentia slate, stuffed birds, wax flowers and Cork Ginghams. Most of the major Cork businesses and manufactories participated, while individuals such as Mr. Abraham Hargrave, of Ballynoe, an 'amateur mechanic', exhibited his improved batteries, and Daniel Sheehan showed a dinner service fired in Rostellan clay. The Royal Cork Institution and its School of Art had close connections with the private medical schools in Cork, connections which were not surprising since at that time it was mainly doctors of medicine who studied anatomy and received scientific training. Dr. Woodroffe's School of Anatomy on Warren Street was one of the more important private schools. The sculptor John Hogan, who was studying from the casts in the Institution at this time, carved a male and a female skeleton for Dr. Woodroffe, for use in teaching anatomy. These skeletons survived within living memory, but seem to have been gradually dismembered by students of the School of Art in this century, to the point where all that now survives in the collection of the Crawford is a skull, a spinal column, some leg bones and a foot: Slightly macabre but finely carved relics of one of the earliest medical schools in Ireland.
Dr. Woodroffe wrote a letter to the managers of the Institution in June 1826: When the Society for promoting the Fine Arts existed as an independent body, I was in the habit (at their request) of delivering a course of lectures on Anatomy as connected with sculpture and painting. Since the junction of that Society with the Cork Institution these lectures have been discontinued. The students have lately applied to me by letter, deploring their want of means or opportunity of acquiring a knowledge of what they justly esteem the Basis of their Art, and requesting that I should again resume my labours; their solicitation I am inclined (with your permission) to yield to . . .[McSweeney and Reilly (Part 1), p. 30]
