Intro Cub Pilot ... Glossary FAREWELL - 1902 The Eugene Field Memorial Tablet In June 1902 Clemens paid his final visit to the Mississippi River when he accepted an honorary degree at the University of Missouri in Columbia and helped dedicate a steamboat named in his honor. After he made a speech at the dedication of the steamboat MARK TWAIN , he later attended an unveiling for a memorial marker to writer Eugene Field. The dedication was reported in the St. Louis Globe Democrat on June 7, 1902.

Birthplace Memorial Unveiled by Mark Twain
MARK TWAIN UNVEILING THE MEMORIAL TABLET IN THE WALL OF THE HOUSE WHERE EUGENE FIELD WAS BORN.
A great living Missourian paid a tribute to a sweet singer of Missouri when Mark Twain, at 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, unveiled a bronze tablet to the memory of Eugene Field at the house on South Broadway where the poet was born. The ceremony was simple, but impressive, and necessarily. It is expected that the tablet and house will be an objective point for visitors in the city for many years to come. Stepping to the front of the party, Mr. Clemens took off his hat and spoke as follows:

By Eugene Field
D EAR wife, last midnight, whilst I read The tomes you so despise, A spectre rose beside the bed, And spake in this true wise: I bade him welcome, and we twain Discussed with buoyant hearts The various things that appertain To bibliomaniac arts. Pray tell me of that host There are no auctions to molest, No creditors to dun. Their heavenly rapture has no bounds Beside that jasper sea; Much I rejoiced to hear him speak Of biblio-bliss above, For I am one of those who seek What bibliomaniacs love. What doth concern me most, That they our heavenly joy should share Who vex us here below. The few are those who have been kind To husbands such as we; When we would read in bed? Or, wanting victuals, make a fuss If we buy books instead? Which leads where torments roll, And worms, yes, bookworms, vent their wrath Upon the guilty soul. Untouched of bibliomaniac grace, That saveth such as we, For we together by and by Would join that heavenly host; Echoes from the Sabine Farm TO THE FOUNTAIN OF BANDUSIA
O FOUNTAIN of Bandusia!
