Interviews with Angie Debo, 1981-1985
Collection # 85-013 Prepared by Mildred L. Jackson Go to the Debo Interviews Subject Index Between 1981 and 1985, Dr. Gloria Valencia-Weber and Dr. Glenna Matthews, both faculty members at Oklahoma State University at the time, conducted 17 interviews with Dr. Angie Debo. Included in the interviews are discussions of her writing and relationship with publishers, her family and hometown, her employment, her work on establishing Indian land and water rights, and on the history of Oklahoma. These interviews are an important source of information for Angie Debo's philosophies on several topics. Gloria Valencia-Weber was a faculty member in the Psychology Department at Oklahoma State University at the time the interviews were conducted. She received a master's degree from Oklahoma State University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. She met Angie Debo while both were working for the Oklahoma American Civil Liberties Union. There are those who brought social change, such as Jane Addams, whose book Twenty Years at Hull House , describes her life as founder of the Chicago-based social agency that was one of the first in the nation to care for the indigent. There is Robinson native James Jones, whose novels From Here to Eternity The Front Page, that describes the halcyon days of Chicago journalism in the 1920s. There is the futurist science-fiction works of Waukegan’s Ray Bradbury and the "big shoulder" of Galesburg’s Carl Sandburg. Regardless of the type of writing each engaged, they all have a place in American literature and Illinois history.

HAVE BEEN INSPIRED BY THEIR HOME STATE'S
CITIES AND TOWNS AND PRAIRIES Essay by Sandra Olivetti Martin
Read the great writers from anywhere; take your pick. No doubt you'd be wowed at the literary achievement of New York, Texas or even Alaska. But Illinois, I can tell you, is special. Illinois is the state of divine inspiration. Our writers are life-struck lovers, effervescent over what nature or God or humankind hath wrought. They are street-corner preachers, climbing onto their soapboxes to broadcast the apocalypse. They are somber realists, anguished existentialists, conscientious reformers and thrilled lyricists. Regardless of color, creed or sex, of national origin, of outlook pessimistic or optimistic, Illinois writers sing as irrepressibly as canaries, pouring out their faith in a world perfectible. If only they can find the right word. Consider the words of Donald Culross Peattie, prefacing his 1935 biography of naturalist John James Audubon, Singing in the Wilderness: "I wanted to tell of him as all Americans love to tell each other Lincoln stories. Our listeners have usually heard them before but even so, we cannot hold them in; they let something escape from our hearts into the open; they let the winged best of us free."

The First Word on the Algonquin Round Table
By Stuart Y. Silverstein Soon after twenty or thirty of the cleverest youngish things from New York's literary, entertainment, and journalism industries started eating lunch together at a circular table in a prominent midtown Manhattan hotel, a popular newspaper cartoonist invoked Arthurian legend and depicted them as the modern-day knights of an Algonquin Round Table. The name stuck. They were self-promoters whose table-talk tended toward calculatedly sparkling malice, and much of the rest of New York waited to hear the latest from Dorothy Parker and her group. The lunches started in June 1919 with a parody of a welcome-home party for the New York Times drama critic Alexander Woollcott (1887-1943), who had just returned from war service in France. More than thirty of Woollcott's 'friends' attended, mainly to needle him, but he lapped up the attention and launched into a series of war stories that all seemed to begin 'When I was in the theatre of war...' This caused one listener to reply: 'Aleck, if you ever were in the theatre of war, it was in the last-row seat nearest the exit'. The lunches became a daily routine. Between five and fifteen 'Algonks' were apt to appear on any given day - others had to be invited - and of these, perhaps eight or ten are fixed in the public memory as the nucleus of what its members called the Vicious Circle. The witty aphorisms of this group are quite widely known, but they have also proved to be a valuable source of antedatings for the
