Ferber, Edna
(1887-1968), writer Born on August 15, 1887, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Edna Ferber grew up there and in Appleton, Wisconsin. She began her career at 17 as a reporter in Appleton, later working for the Milwaukee Journal. Her early stories introduced a traveling petticoat saleswoman named Emma McChesney, whose adventures are collected in several books, including (1915). Ferber's characters are firmly tied to the land, and they experience conflicts between their traditions and new, more dynamic trends. Although her books are somewhat superficial in their careful attention to exterior detail at the expense of profound ideas, they do offer an accurate, lively portrait of middle-class Midwestern experience in 1920s and '30s America. After So Big (1924), for which she won a Pulitzer Prize, and Show Boat (1926), which became a popular play, critics hailed her as the greatest woman novelist of the period. Her novels Cimarron Saratoga Trunk Giant (1952), and Ice Palace (1958) were all made into motion pictures. Her autobiographies, A Peculiar Treasure (1939) and A Kind of Magic (1963), evince her genuine and encompassing love for America. Ferber died in New York, New York, on April 16, 1968.

FERBER, EDNA (1887-1968). Edna Ferber, novelist, was born on August 15, 1887, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Jacob Charles and Julia (Neumann) Ferber. Her father was a Jewish immigrant from Hungary. The family left Kalamazoo when Edna was three years old to live in Chicago for a year. Afterward, they spent seven years in Ottumwa, Iowa, and finally settled in Appleton, Wisconsin, where she graduated from Ryan High School. She became the first female reporter for the Appleton Crescent , although she had no desire to be a writer. Her work on the high school newspaper and her publication of a feature article on the confirmation service at Temple Emanu-El in Appleton had impressed the Crescent 's editor. After she was fired by a new editor who did not care for her style of writing, Ferber was offered a job with the Milwaukee Journal . She took a leave from her duties at the Journal due to illness and returned to her family's home in Appleton to recuperate. There she started writing and selling her short stories and began work on her first novel, Dawn O'Hara, The Girl Who Laughed
